Did you all like John L's comment on the Flag Plant?

It's all mute, and revenge is sweet. But how did you like his comments about the Flag Plant last year? "I'm disapointed that my players couldn't find the 50"? What an idiot. Nice message he sends to his players. Really classy there John L.

Yeah, I think that was the moment I really got into the game. And then the fight brought in a whole new dimension.

What was Trannon thinking.... going into a crowd of ND players? Not a good move.

Back to the point, I found JLS to be an arrogant ass in that interview. I had some semblance of respect for the guy before then.. but when he attempted to brush it off, it only made me more pissed off.

It's strange, I think his intent was to "win over" both sides. By making fun of the players, he wasn't rejecting what they actually did, and in doing so, he remained loyal to the MSU fans.. but at the same time, to ND fans it sounded like an approval, which was the last thing I---and probably everyone else---expected. I figured that even if he did approve of it, he wouldn't let it be known in public, because that's not the 'proper' thing to do as a head football coach.

So it seemed as though he was flaunting it.... and I thought he was a complete dick afterward; being able to dislike the head coach of your opponent makes the win a lot better :)

My next doot neighbor is a HS football coach. John L Smith verballed one of his players, didn't tell him that he needed to make the decision quickkly, then 2 weeks later rescinded the verbal offer telling the kid that he filled the slot with a juco transfer.

He strikes me as a classless coach at somewhat of a classless program.

Feelings about Jon L Smith comments??

Feelings about Jon L Smith comments??

I have slept on his comments played during the game about the flag planting last year. I have come to the conclusion it was the most disrespectful comment I think I have ever heard a head coach say in an interview. He really shows no respect for ND, the game or himself by making that comment. It's not a suprise this team falls apart every year. They are a bunch school yard bullys that wimper once they get punched in the mouth. I hope they lose every game from hear on out.

I officially have moved this team up to my no. 1 dispised team.

He's trying to make light of it, when he should just be saying "it was dumb and my players won't be doing that again."

Are you talking about 2004? The "ND flag incident" that everyone talks about but that no one -- no one -- seems to have any pictures of?

But hey, people believe in Sasquatch too.

Regarding the "ND flag incident of 2004"... here, OSU_Fan, want to borrow this? I used to have it on the wall of my dorm room in college. I'll be glad to let you have it though.

Really! ND planted a flag at MSU in 04? I looked everywhere I couldn't find nothing on it. Do you have a link to a story, or a picture? I would really like to see it.

I won't hold my breath however.

If I was Charlie Weis all I would have done was got that video footage of John L talking about how his players missed the 50 and running his mouth, and he should have just put that on play in the lockeroom at halftime without saying anything.....if that doesn't get you pissed off and ready to knock someone around I don't know what will.

Yeah, he reminds me of a wicked red-headed step-child that throws tantrums at not getting his way about everything. For instance, after the personal fouls occurred, he was pitching such a fit, I thought the cart was going to come over and take him to the hospital to diagnose his apparent heart attack. Anyway, those comments he made were just as classless as his players last year. No respect at all.

You want to know what is even WORSE? At home, I saw a stupid Big Ten commercial during the game putting emphasis on sportmanship...haha...what a JOKE!! I love beating MSU and absolutely shocking their stadium to a grinding silence. The image of MSU fans crying in the stands and refusing to accept what happened will be forever burned into my brain. I Love IT!!

They should have fired him Sunday morning for blowing that lead.

That was funny watching him meltdown on the sideline after the penalty. Like he could see what was going on in the middle of a crowd from 50 yards away. I was yelling at him to take a swing at the ref. LOL, what a maroon!

People talked about the "bad play calling" by Georgia Tech in week one, but this was a biggest gift victory I can recall in a long time. Lost in the wonderful heroics of Notre Dame, who I assume knows the game is four quarters long, was the complete stupidity of Michigan State's staff. A 16 point lead and they're throwing the ball, running their QB on options....moronic. They deserved to lose this game and JLS deserves what comes to him.

I understand what you're saying, but I'm not quite ready to put them number one. There are definitely others that I would throw in the mix on what their coaches and/or fans have done to disrespect ND .... Miami, Stanford, BC, FSU, USC, tOSU, etc. MSU (fat Sparty) is right up there though!!!

Depending on how John L Smith addressed his team about planting the flag, he may have actually handled the situation well.

1. He didn't want to throw his players under the bus
2. He attempted to use humor to ligthen what had developed into a serious issue

So long as he went to his team and chewed there butts out for the stupidity, I think he handled it well. If he told his players the same thing he told the media, not good at all.

Um, I doubt he chewed them out, he probably told them good job. He's an idiot. Read this article.

MSU goes on offensive to refute Weis

Dave Dye / The Detroit News

EAST LANSING -- Michigan State coach John L. Smith's news conference Monday began with a video presentation to dispute Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis' claim that he was slapped in the face by a MSU player during a sideline altercation in Saturday's game.

Weis went on the field and pleaded with game officials who were trying to sort out the penalties at the time.

A replay clearly showed Weis telling the officials that he had gotten hit in the face.

"I'm not going to contend that anybody is lying, but you take a look at the film," Smith said.

During a post-game news conference, Weis reiterated that he had gotten hit, but then clarified it Sunday by saying he wasn't certain whether it was someone from Michigan State or Notre Dame who made contact.

The incident occurred after MSU quarterback Drew Stanton was hit while going out of bounds along the Notre Dame sideline. The replays showed two Notre Dame assistant coaches then grabbed MSU players Matt Trannon, Kerry Reed, Javon Ringer and Daniel Zynn, who went over to protect their teammate. Trannon's helmet was ripped off in the process.

The video presented by Michigan State showed the incident from various angles.

"That's a very serious allegation," MSU associate athletic director John Lewandowski said of Weis' claim. "Coach Smith demanded a full investigation. That type of behavior by one of our players won't be tolerated.

"… If you look at the complete video from every angle possible, below and above, at no time does he (Weis) come in contact with any player from Michigan State."

Smith said the video has been sent to the Big Ten. He indicated he thinks it's up to Notre Dame to punish the assistant coaches involved.

"If it were our situation, the league would probably step in and do something, suspend (them) … but I don't know, they don't have a league," Smith said. "Who knows what's going to happen."

Weis' weekly news conference is scheduled for today. Brian Hardin, Notre Dame's sports information director for football, said Weis wasn't accusing MSU players of hitting him and even joked that it might have actually been "friendly fire" from one of the Irish players.

Hardin added that he hadn't seen the video, but he believes the Notre Dame assistants were trying to separate the MSU players from the Irish players so the incident wouldn't escalate.

The incident actually did escalate after Trannon was pulled from behind by one of the Notre Dame assistants.

As for his players' role, Smith said: "They didn't throw a punch in the whole deal. Their quarterback's head is under the bench. They're over there to help protect him and get him out of there."

Smith said he was angry with the officials, who were from the Big Ten, for calling a personal foul against Trannon that wiped out the 15-yard penalty against Notre Dame for the original late hit.

"I thought the call (by the officials) was wrong," Smith said. "You listen to a cockin' bull story (from Weis) and you change it and now you make it a no-call after a kid gets hit like that out of bounds, it's wrong. In my view, our officials made the call wrong."

Notre Dame rallied from a 16-point deficit in the final nine minutes for a 40-37 victory at Spartan Stadium.

Is someone a little bit of a sore loser or what? I like how he calls them "our" officials though. And I still don't think it was a late hit.
