I figure if people start threads about their favorite sports, so can I.

Congratulations to Emma Reaney and the ND Women's swim team for their performance at the NCAA Championships this weekend.

While ND has never been a power swim program, there have been improvements over the past few years. This culminated in our first ever Champion.

Emma won the 200 Breast in an new American and NCAA record of 2:04.06, breaking her own record she set a couple weeks ago at the ACC Championships.

For those of you who don't know, that is frickin' fast. Emma also placed 3rd in the 100 Breast in a very close race.

She is definitely capable of making the US Rio Team, and I can't imagine that isn't a goal of hers. However, only the top 2 swimmers in each event at the US Trials qualify for the Olympics. And short course (25 yard pool) which the NCAA swims, and long course (50 meter pool) for the Olympics are pretty different for Breaststroke due to the importance of turns.

But to put it in perspective, in this race, she beat Breeja Larson from Texas A&M by over 1 second; and Breeja won an Olympic Gold medal two years ago as part of the US Medley Relay team. So Emma can definitely do it; but it will be interesting to see how she does in the summer long course meets.

In my heyday, I may have beaten her – but I would have been swimming freestyle (Australian Crawl) rather than breast stroke.

I considered joining the swim team when I hit ND in 1970, but the pool at The Rock (the only one that existed at the time) posed the possibility of drowning during warm-ups.

A classmate, and friend to this day ,still proudly wears his Monogram Jacket for swimming.

Me? I fell in with the degenerate hippie crowd ...

Go, Emma, Go!!!
