Should Charlie Weis be recruiting some new coaches?

I’ve read so many posts discussing the performance of the defensive line, secondary and running backs; and how promising the future is if Notre Dame can sign a few more five star recruits and I agree with most of them but in effort not to over analyze 19 and 20 year old kids and former coaches for there terrible recruiting practices I would like to propose a new question that hasn’t been asked:

Should Charlie Weis be recruiting some new coaches?

The current coaching staff consists of:
  1. Michael Haywood - Offensive Coordinator & Running Backs
  2. Rob Ianello - Receivers Coach & Recruiting Coordinator
  3. John Latina - Assistant Head Coach (Offense)/Off. Line
  4. Bill Lewis - Asst. Head Coach (Defense)/Def. Backs
  5. Rick Minter - Defensive Coordinator & Linebackers
  6. Jappy Oliver - Defensive Line Coach
  7. Bernie Parmalee - Tight Ends Coach/Asst. Special Teams
  8. Brian Polian - Head Special Teams Coach/Ast. Def. Backs
  9. Peter Vaas - Quarterbacks
  10. Jeff Burrow - Defensive Graduate Assistant
  11. Shane Waldron - Offensive Graduate Assistant

Clearly Charlie Weis’s NFL experience has been a huge factor in Brady Quinn’s development as well as Jimmy Clausen, Zach Frazer, Demetrius Jones and Mitch Mustain desire to play for him, but has Bernie Parmalee’s NFL experience been a factor in Fasano’s and Carlson performance and aided in the recruitment of Konard Reuland and Mike Ragone?

Charlie can’t coach every player to his potential, he needs help.

Has the size of the coaching staff increased since Lou Holtz or Ara Parseghian?

Dose Notre Dame need more assistant coaches like Bernie Parmalee or other alumni with NFL experience?

Are there NFL position coaches that would like to work under Charlie Weiss as a coordinator?

Are there coordinators on SEC, Big 10 or Pac10 teams Notre Dame could “steal’?

What about a Head Coach from a 1-AA looking to move up to the next level?

It just seems to me that college coaches have so much more responsibility that adding to and upgraded the coaching staff should be just as high of a priority as recruiting.

Charlie is great, but he can’t do it alone.

I'm not being rude or hateful, but is this a serious question? Do you think this coaching staff is doing a bad job?

No, I don’t think they are doing a bad job but saying there is a lack of talent and waiting for new talent isn’t the complete answer. Professional teams such as the Dallas Mavericks have updated the coaching staffs to reflect the modern game and I honestly don’t know what the size of Lou Holtz or Ara Parseghian coaching staffs were. There has to be one Notre Dame fan that is also a Washington Redskin fan that is happy with the way Dan Snyder is willing to spend top dollar on the entire staff and not just the Head Coaching position.

Haha...nice...or maybe a little computer assistance is needed. Madden doesn't still have computer assistance does it?

Anyway, I catch the drift here, but on first glance, this is an all-star group of coaches. I do think, though, that the one coach that sticks out as needing a little accountability might be Latina.

He returns almost the entire line, yet the best one is almost Sam Young...the freshman. This may be a depth issue, however, as we really have nobody to turn to in order to increase the Line's intensity.

Honestly, I think Lewis & Haywood are doing a great job. I think the O-line is just undersized in some respects. It is good to have small fast guys against crappy teams, but when you play a Michigan that has size and talent, you just aren't going to win many of those battles. Minter's blitzes were good, I thought. The Linebackers are a little small overall, but they are fast. We are just picking our poison there, I think. Small and fast, or bigger, a little slower, and inexperienced. The secondary has upside, but I am still wondering why our guys still get beat for big plays like Wooden. Lambert is a talent issue seemingly. The TEs, in my opinion, are somewhat of a talent issue...I think Carlson is a little small, but it is give take...he is fast and generally has good hands.

The WRs are my biggest question, but that may come with the fact that one of our guys almost has a mercenary's mindset (Shark). And, Rhema has had a history of dropping balls...The worst one I can remember was at Syracuse when he was wide open and just dropped it as he ran down the sideline. That game was also missing a good portion of the staff as they were out recruiting.

Ty...A real man of genius. Queue Budweiser voice...Thank YOU Ty Willingham for your unbelievably bad run as coach at Notre Dame. Random guy in background: HE's NOT EVEN IRISH! Budweiser Voice: While referring to yourself in the third person, you managed to underrecruit and underperform, but your golf game never took a hit. Random guy: 9 IRON or WEDDDGE! Budweiser Voice: We Salute you Coach Willingham and find it ironic that you are now a Husky, b/c you will be in the doghouse once again. Budweiser reminds you to drink responsibly. The NCAA limits the size of coaching staffs. This staff is as big as it can be. They can not add to it.

As for the question of changing staff members, these guys need a chance to coach their own players in their system before judging them. Though outside of maybe the X's and O's, I don't think the team was psycologically prepared Saturday.

Coach Latina has a super reputation that predates Notre Dame! For some reason I didn't like him in past years because of his success with offensive linemen and the fact that he wasn't at ND. (The way I didn't like Reggie Bush). When I heard that he was coming on board, I couldn't believe that we were getting him. Diddo for Ruben Mendoza. Ruben's reputation is huge in the NFL. He was the most talked about Conditioning coach at the NFL ranks to my knowledge. We easily have the best staff in the country and that is a big reason recruits are coming to ND.

We will develop a dynasty unlike anything college football has ever seen!

We lost a big part of our offensive line success last year in Dan Stephenson. That is why he is in the NFL. He was under rated but he played extremely well. From what I saw, Ryan Harris played shut out offense. Our problem was on the right side of the line. That is where many of the break downs came.

The only way to beat ND is to put Brady Quinn in a pressure cooker. Michigan knew that. Coach Carr said it. Penn State didn't. We will get blitzed until Brady can make the quick reads and get rid of the ball in a hurry, and the tight ends and wide receivers can do quick route adjustments and catch the ball. When we reach that point, Brady will be very well seasoned for the NFL and has a chance to come in and start for the team that selects him. Bring on the Blitz!.

There are some schemes in the New England Patriots offense that just break the backs of blitzes. We need some improvement in the offensive line and a more seasoned Brady Quinn to do it.

If you were at the Spring game you would know we were going to have problems on the right side of the line. Sam Young played very well for a freshman, but Michigan attacked the right side continuously. If you have a recording of the game, go back and look. Also, for the sake of God, show some mercy and charity and don't call out players after reviewing the game.

And remember, Michigan played two patsies with a new offensive coordinator and defensive coordianator and showed us nothing in those games. I don't think we had the info to prepare for them at the level necessary to beat them. If we played them again, the game would be different because we know more about their schemes.

Now you know how extremely good Maurice Stovall is! Only his lack of speed kept him from being the first Wide out taken in the draft.

You better get used to seeing the blitz as long as Charlie is coach. The quarterback is the key to our offense. Chop off the head and the body falls.

Master the blitz and we destroy teams and continue to produce the very best quarterbacks in college. Bring on the Blitz!

What bothers me is that we saw the Blitz plenty last year. BYU brought the house every play it seemed like. I just wonder what is really going on. I want to know what is behind Brady throwing the ball whereever on top of the receivers not getting open.

I would agree that Latina is highly reputable, that Sam Young is doing well, and that Ryan Harris is, too, but a couple of those guys need their asses kicked or we just need to put in some freshmen to get them some PT. Despite Latina's creds, however, if his guys don't perform, I guarantee Weis is gonna get after him.

Weis' protection schemes worked against NFL defenses, and Latina has had success protecting against SEC defenses. The problem is, you can only coach guys up so much. You have to work with what you have to work with. And improving that is not as easy as plugging in freshmen, no matter how much potential they have. Young is an anomoly. Freshmen offensive linemen are often not physically ready for the power or speed of major D1 front sevens. They'll make their largest improvements in the weight room in the offseason. Not to mention through a year's worth of getting pounded on by jr's and sr's in practice.

Size is a given, but bodies can also mature physically. There's a reason kids out of high school can make it in a sport such as pro basketball, yet the NFL fights like tooth and nail to keep them out of their league. They are simply not physically mature yet in many cases.

I have confidence that beginning on 08, we will see a dominant line.

Scooper, you are dead on. Freshmen simply aren't strong enough to play the position with exceptions such as Ryan Harris and Sam Young. It takes college linemen on both sides of the ball at least two years of conditioning to play successfully. If you look at clips of practice, even Mick Turkovich, who has all the talent in the world, is about two years away from having the strength to dominate.

If Charlie can continue to recruit the top players we will absolutely dominate College Football.

By the way, Ryan Harris has the highest praises of Coach Latina for what he has taught them. Coming from our most experienced player, that is a complement. Dan Santucci will play on Sundays. I've seen him pancake some good D tackles the last three games. I haven't got a good read on Bob Morton. I just know the guy is one of the most likeable players you will ever meet.

Get a grip fellas, we lose one game and now we have to get new coaches? The talent is coming and the future is bright. We have to live with and support what we have now.

Scooper we have some jumpers can you take care of that?
