3rd Down Conv. Rate

3rd Down Conv. Rate

We're #96!

Look at the teams below ND. The one the things that impressed my about last year's team was their ability to convert third downs. Not so impressed this year.

Look at the juggernauts below us. ND is in pathetic company.

Scroll down and check it out for yourselves.

9 per game after 3 games played and 76 yards per game.

76 yards a game in penalties. That's a scoring drive right there.

Any one specific area that's a problem, or is it all over the board? I seen few personal fouls which is really out of character for our program. Holds on the OL seem to be the most prevelant which shows me that were having some problems there. What's your take Jigga?

This is the ONE area where Weis has failed thus far... needs to improve on this, YESTERDAY..

Yeah, I agree that Weis has "failed" in this one area. First, let me state, I love Charlie, and love what he is doing with the program, but he talked about how disciplined his teams would be. At this time, that is not the case. Definitely an area we need large improvement in and I place primary responsibility on the coaches...

Penalties are on the players, not coaches IMO.

I agree with that, as far as the holding calls that usually happens when you are either getting beat or you are about to be beaten, which I think shows why the OL can't block. I think CW can only do so much and it's up to the players once they get on the field.

I agree and disagree.

Agree that the coaches cannot "play" for the 11 on the field, persay. The players are making the mistakes physically.

Disagree in that a multitude of penalties, in my mind, shows lack of discipline and mental focus. To me, that is coaching. False starts, holds, personal fouls = copious amounts of running punishment.

What's your take Jigga?

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but off the top of my head I think the O Line has been guilty more often than not.

I was about to say the same thing. Holding is not a discipline problem. Holding is a direct result of a lineman getting beat. False starts are the result of nervous lineman. We get few personal fouls which are a discipline problem. So there's no discipline problem. Our lineman are just getting beat and we resort to grabbing and clutching. They have to get better somehow, because if teams are able to hit Quinn early and often we are in for a long day against good teams. He has shown that once you rattle his cage early, he's pretty much rendered ineffective for the remainder of the day (except for maybe a few instances). The line has to improve somehow or we need to go to the 2-minute drill early and often so that we can build a lead.

I still find it amazing that our 3 opponents thus far have been so good that they haven't held us a single time.

and I agree that as a whole penalties are on the players, when a coach gets credit for having a disciplined team, why shouldn't the reverse be true.

To me, the two guys that need to get on the asses of their squads are Latina and Polian.

There have been quite a few ignorant special teams penalties on kick coverage that have set the offense into deep holes on their own side of the field.

We'll see how it goes the first half at MSU.

They are also drive killers. Penalties are killing our game...ugh

That's why I posted the 3rd conversion stats. Penalties and 3rd conversions go hand in hand. This team is shooting itself in the foot at every opportunity - penalties, turnovers, dropped passes, bad passes. Name something bad this team has done it. Complete opposite of last year.

You are right. That's why it really hurts more. I assumed the stupid mistakes were behind us. The lack of fire. Etc.

I do believe we are at a turning point...for the better.

But I am getting really sick of the little stupid crap.

You guys are right. The holding penalties are devastating. Then we're dropping passes or the pass is thrown too high or too low or behind or too far in front. I want us to get our heads out of our asses and play some football. Play with the edge we had last year. We have to. We're not good enough to say "We are Notre Dame......Bow down Beeyotch!!".

This is what I was referring to... Penelties are the result of a lack of focus and attention to detail, this are skills developed in practice. If it only happened on week then, ok, its the players. But basically in the third week, it's the coaches responsibility to fix the problem. Anyone that every played the game knows that. I remember in college, if I got a late hit/personal call, my ass was running until I puked. If I got an offsides or def pass interference call I was doing push ups. Trust me I started 26 games in college and I got three penelties, one offside and one blocking in the back on an interception return, both came my sophomore year. One facemask my junior year, but I didn't have to run becuase the film showed I only got the guys shirt. This ONE is on weis and co. But that is the only thing I blame him for.
