I'm not sure why he decided to step aside from play calling duties in 2013 to begin with.

I also don't get the negative stigma that some people have on head coaches being play callers. Both coaches in the NCG were play callers.

Although it only seems to work with the head coaches calling offense as opposed to defense. I don't know of any HC that also the defense.

Carroll, Saban, and Charlie Strong called defenses for their teams. I honestly see more successful head coaches who call defenses themselves, rather than offensive coaches who do it.

I stand corrected then. I forgot about Carroll. I never knew Saban called his own Ds before as HC but I will take your word on it.

Next fall, we will find out if Brian Kelley will be able to turn a stinky sandwich into an ice cream cone. And, while we are on the subject of stinky sandwiches, is Trent Dilfer(elite eleven quarterback coach/ coordinator) interested in coaching?

On another note any idea if and when ND is bringing in a new QB coach?

I know BK works with the QBs at times but ND should hire a new QB coach as the head coach needs to be free to go around check up on the entire team.

I like this idea. It's always a good idea when you're in a situation where the OC could change every year. More stability for the offense.

Well to be fair, Auburn's OC is on the field with Malzan. Malzan stands at the line of scrimmage and the OC stands level with the defensive backfield. They both are watching for different things to make play calls. Its pretty interesting how they do it (I noticed it earlier in the year and thought it was weird because I did not know what was going on, but in the NCG, it was talked about).

Its like Malzan calls a play and the OC watches the defense for holes and tendencies and they communicate with each other so Malzan can pick his point of attack. I have never seen this strategy before.
