If I'm not mistaken, this guy was a 5 star OL and yet I don't think I've read a single word about him since practice started. Is he injured? Are the coaches planning on redshirting him? Or has he just underperformed?

Curious if anyone knows.

He's a freshman. We have some good guards already. He'll be fine.

Eric Olsen took everyone to task.

As time goes on, I think we're going to grow fond of him.

Olsen is supposed to have a mean streak a mile wide. The future of our interior line looks great.

I actually was kind of surprised that Olsen made the two deep. Nothing against him but it is tough your freshman, but obviously he has proven himself. ND's offensive lines in the future will be like a brick wall, but with legs.

I have not heard much either...however, as a true freshman its more the exception at OL to get noticed.

(just for the record he was 4-stars with both Rivals and Scout)

Unless your name is Sam Young, freshman OL rarely have any impact.

but no worries, he should be a good one.

Michael Rothstein said:
Second group of offensive linemen during drills today: Brian Mattes, Eric Olsen, Dan Chervanick, Matt Carufel and Paul Duncan. Mike Turkovich was on the third line. Who knows if this means anything, but it could hint that Carufel could be one of the freshmen making the trip.

So will Matt be dressed for GT and see some playing time?

Yep, it's not ideal to have that many freshmen and sophomores playing key roles that early. This group should be up to the task, though.

I was surprised to see Olsen on the two deep. He got the fewest accolades of all our (stellar) frosh O-linemen. But I look for more than one or two frosh O-linemen to see action, including Carufel. We are going to need youngsters with some game action next year.

Exhibit #467 why you should not take rivals and scout's stars as gospel.

Actually, Rivals listed Carufel as the #5 OT, 4 Stars and Olsen as the #6 OT also with 4 Stars. Both got a 5.9 rating which seems like a wash.

Scout listed Carufel as the #10 OL and Olsen as #49. Scout had them both as 4 Stars

As I recall ND fans seemed to rave more about Carufel than Olsen although Olsen was about 20 pounds bigger, stronger (benched about 30 pounds more), and listed faster (5.1 versus 5.3). I suspect fans were more impressed with Carufel playing for Cretin-Derham Hall in the Midwest than for Olsen playing for Brooklyn Poly in NYC.

That was my point. Olsen got the least hype and he's looking to ge the first guard to contribute.

But the point is Rivals and Scout had them both as 4 Stars and apparently the difference of one over the other isn't much.

You are right on. They are DEFINITELY up to the task.

CW has done exactly what he needed to do. He brought in top notch talent and will bring in more. We MAY have a down year next year or so...but the team will grow through this thin period of elder players. 2009 should be an amazing year...with 3 years of tremendous recruits we should be well situated to make a run at the title again.

I am not writing off 2007 and 2008...but I look at 2009 and just say "wow!"

Honestly, the thought of any of our freshmen o-linemen being forced into a game scares me. We are talking about 18 year olds expecting to know not only CW's playbook but also being put in a situation with hostile environments, zero experience with the rest of the starters, and staring across from guys that have started for 2-3 years in some cases. I am sorry, but I don't see carufel, olsen, or any other freshman lineman being experienced enough to hold their own, especially against the brutal schedule that ND faces year-in and year-out. Obviously, Sam Young is in a league of his own and has always been considered a stud, so he's the exception.

Olsen was out there and holding his own this last weekend. We will see more freshman as the year goes on in game time. We need to make sure we have guys ready for next year or it will be a very rough year for the QB.
