Fires reported near Ohio State after football winUpdated 9/10/2006 12:40 PM ET
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Couches and mattresses were set on fire outside houses in Ohio State University student neighborhoods, and three people were struck by a car following the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes' 24-7 win over No. 2 Texas on Saturday night.
There were 35 to 40 fires set in student neighborhoods, said Columbus police Sgt. David Howson, whose department arrested about 17 people, five of them on arson charges. A trash bin also was set ablaze, burning two nearby cars, he said.
Battalion Fire Chief Kevin O'Connor said he was treated for bumps and bruises after he and two others were struck by a car that came through a temporary command post set up in the driveway of a student union building.
The two others, an Ohio State official and her husband, were treated early Sunday at Ohio State University Medical Center for minor injuries.
Most students haven't returned to campus because fall classes don't start until Sept. 20, Howson said. Still, police concentrated their patrols on the campus area last night.
"This happens on big games, so we were prepared for it," Howson said.
The victory kept the Buckeyes (2-0) in perfect position for a run to a college football national title. Texas, which saw its 21-game winning streak snapped, is the defending national champion.

Alright!!

Another Ohio State post. Too bad USC was idle. Wouldn't have mattered if they had played two games, somehow OSU finds their way out here on a daily basis.

Is Columbus Burning?

We should be so lucky.

Jigga, I know USC was idle today, but Reggie Bush had 141 total yards in the Aints' win over the Brownies.

Trust me, no one cares.

I'm sure everyone is stiffy over the Packers getting whipped by the Bears because AJ Hawk played for Ohio State.

..like we don't have a reason to dislike Ohio State.......

Michigan is one of our 'established' rivals, but I have a lot more respect for them than Ohio State because they don't sell their soul for success.

Are we talking football only here?

You're probably not old enough to remember Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, Jalen Rose and Ray Jackson.

When it comes to selling souls, I'd be VERY careful who you start slinging rocks at in the name of Notre Dame, especially teams that aren't even on the damn schedule.

West Virginia students burned couches after their season opening victory too. That's what drunken college kids do in Columbus, Morgantown and lots of other places.

Booze. Solution to and cause of all of life's problems.

Yeah, I had them in mind, actually. But I was talking about the football program.

You could say the same thing to the ND fans on this site living in Pennsylvania about their approach to Penn State.

Oh wait, you can't, because Penn State isn't run like a drug cartel.

Well, I don't have any problems with that. It's harmless fun, most of the time. And if you are going to go crazy about anything, I think football would be allowed for. I have the utmost respect for 'rowdy' fans, I think they understand the spirit of the game better than anyone. And for the most part, I have absolutely nothing against Ohio State fans, though, they can be annoying and obnoxious (just like me with ND, I'm certain). Practically all of my friends are OSU fans, and the 'rivalry' just makes Saturdays more interesting and meaningful. But I do have a problem with the richest of the OSU fans living within a few blocks of my home in my suburb of Columbus... because everyone who follows the (cough) corrupt (cough) program, knows that this is the Santa's Workshop of 'gift-giving' to 18 year-olds.

I get the idea, Jigga, that I'm annoying the hell out of you tonight, LOL.

One shouldn't conflate BB and FB programs. Otherwise, I'm picking the Irish to get the Big East's automatic BCS bid this year.

Doesn't the NCAA conflate BB and FB programs under "lack of institutional control"?

I don't think so... Did SMU's basketball program get the death penalty too? I honestly don't know, but I never heard of a football program losing scholies because of Bball corruption.

Someone call me when Ohio State goes on probation or has Luther Campbell running their program. Lots of talk and a badge when it comes to them, yet for some reason nothing ever seems to get done by anyone.

I care more about 3 more ass whippings this month, not Ohio State. If they're smart, they won't look past Iowa on the road. The season is far from over.
