Rhema's 'non-penalty' Penalty

After allowing the dust to settle. After reading post game press reports. I'm very surprised NOT to read or hear anything about Rhema's penalty.
In my mind, it was the biggest call of the game and the worst call that I've seen in some time.
Like I've said before, without that terrible call it's 1st and 10 at the GT 18.
Score right there.....and the rout could have been on.

From there all the commentary this week would have changed.
No "let's throw Gioia overboard" threads.
No "why did we drop in the polls?" threads.
No "are we over-rated?" threads.

That one bad call changed the whole dynamic of the game. What was a 14-10 game could have easily been 35-7.

The interesting thing is that Charlie doesn't mention it. Why? Because he can't.
He, as head coach, CANNOT be found to be complaining about calls after a game. That's not a message he wants to leave with his squad nor is it good form. But I would almost guarantee you that he and the coaches were incredulous at that call while watching the game tape.

I didn't realize how blatantly wrong the call was until I watched Inside ND Football the other day. I was paying more attention to the Shark more than McKnight but after watching it over and over with Tivo, its just unbelievable that that call was made. Could really understand why CW went mental on the ref.

Would've been a blowout if not for that, or at least an easy win. GT had talent but they were running mostly on the crowd and on pure adrenaline, and only gave up the game when that ran out and talent and coaching took over. If that drives end in a TD like it was going to, the crowd shuts up, the players are demoralized, and ND romps.

And the worst thing is that the 3 in the booth made no mention of it nor did the director whisper into Musberger's ear that there's a play here that you three might want to comment on.
Worst call I've seen a long time. Compounded by terrible play-by-play and analysis.

Rivals has an interview with Rhema, anyone who pays for it (this is neither an endorsement for or against Rivals) can see it here:

The first question was the regarding the holding call.

Paraphrased answer:

Rhema first says that on reviewing film, it was "definitely a hold." (ha, ha, ha......). He then goes on to say, yeah he was pretty ticked off at the time, but, like Quinn, stated that calls are calls and you can't let it get you off focus. Nonetheless, it did get them off rhythm and that any penalty, right or wrong, especially a hold, will tend to stifle a drive.

Thanks Gipper! I sent you some rep for the heads up but it doesn't seem to be showing up.

I've mentioned this on a couple of my rants, and they didn't even show a replay, Bob D nailed it on the head though, it was a huge momentum change. Such bullshit and I'm still kind of mad about it. That play gets run about 800 times every Saturday, and that wasn't even close to a hold.

You know.... you come out return the kickoff to the 40, pick up a first down, ND was rolling, GT is wondering how their gonna hang, you put up a score, open up the playbook, and yep it could have gotten ugly, just ask Purdue last year.

It's over, I'm glad others recognized this, I can now move on.

Thanks IrishEnvy.com

It was a horrible call and definitely killed the drive. But it will probably not be the only bad call against ND this season. Championship teams learn to rise above these calls (especially early). Glad to see ND was able to turn it around and win.

you know the funny thing about that, later in the game, there was a similar play, and I thought Rhema really did hold just a little bit on that one, yet there was no call. and that first one was absolutely outrageous. I agree, if that isn't called, it's a whole different game. It's a good thing that we won anyways, so we don't have to worry about the what-ifs.

There was also pass interference on Shark on that long catch. He pushed off. That's the nature of the game. Some calls go your way and some don't. I will say that when ND goes on the road it is extremely important that they score a TD on the 1st drive. It sets the tone for the rest of the game. If they would have scored on the 1st drive, GTech settles down on all those blitzes and it's game over.
