The starting spot at right tackle. The kid is an absolute beast and if he does end up starting against Georgia Tech, I think that tells you just how good he is. Congrats to Sam!

array for Sam...I hope future recruits take notice. If your good enough, you'll play, regardless of class

Thats very impressive. Once the senior class leaves he will be the pillar for the other outstanding O-lineman taking their place.
What once was a spot worth worrying over has very nice potential for the upcoming years.

Great for Sam, at least we'll have one returnining o line starter in 07 now. I think a lot of the backups will get some playing time too, so maybe the transition in 07 won't be as bad as many of us think.

Ty rarely blew teams out so it was hard for him to get many of the young players some playing time, I expect us to blow out at least 5 or so teams this year so that will be some good mop up time for some of our youngsters....

Can't say I'm surprised here.

No one did anything to standout during spring amongst the Duncan-Turkovich-Mattes trio. Young won his spot on talent and ability alone. Wait until he gets in there and gets a little testy with GT, PSU and scUM.

By the time Purdue rolls around, he'll be carved like oak.

Gosh let's get these games going.........Jiggs you just made me head-butt my comp screen. Tracking Young is going to be very fun each and every game........PSU will be a huge test.

I've been about as cordial as a junkyard dog this week.

I make my coaching debut tonight and I'm about ready to start doing up downs and sphere the copy machine here at work.

IHSA Football starts tonight....it has begun.

Young is the most talented O-line recruit we've had in awhile. But all the talent in the world doesn't counter how impressive it is that he has come in and worked his way into a starter this early. Sure, the spot was open, but Duncan, Turk and Mattes are not chopped liver.

Congrats to Sam...mark my words he will draw Aaron Taylor comparision before he leaves, and will probably win the Outland Trophy as well.

Eric Olsen and John Ryan were big surprises.

The secondary looks stronger and deeper.

Not very surprising. I think the hardest thing was for the coaching staff to bench a senior (he's a senior, right?). Mattes was given a chance, but he just couldn't compete.

I don't know much about him as a player, but my guess is he'll be a great back-up. Who was our right-tackle last year?

Don't cry for Mattes. He'll basically back up the entire line. He'll play a lot this year. That's a great thing to have.

I cry for no one. The best man plays. I understand these kids have dreams, etc, but let's face it...at the NEXT level ONLY the best man plays.

It certainly won't be hard to find big Sam on the field (he's frickin 6'8"). Talk about getting thrown into the fire...Georgia Tech will seem like a piece of cake compared to Penn State and Michigan. I think that Charlie made this decision at the right time. We already have Ryan Miller, Chris Little and Matt Summers-Gavin scheduled for visits and to see a freshman offensive lineman starting should help to lure a few of those guys away from some of the other schools they are considering. I love Charlie's philosophy of playing the best player, no matter what year they are. That will give us an edge in recruiting for the future.

8 days till kickoff...damn I can't wait!

Mattes will be the utility man, much like Bob Morton is/was. He lined up everywhere but center.
