Marines to issue involuntary call-ups
Corps faces shortage of volunteers for deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan
The Associated Press

Updated: 9:52 p.m. CT Aug 22, 2006

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Marine Corps said Tuesday it has been authorized to recall thousands of Marines to active duty, primarily because of a shortage of volunteers for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Up to 2,500 Marines will be brought back at any one time, but there is no cap on the total number of Marines who may be forced back into service in the coming years as the military battles the war on terror. The call-ups will begin in the next several months.
This is the first time the Marines have had to use the involuntary recall since the early days of the Iraq combat. The Army has ordered back about 14,000 soldiers since the start of the war.
Marine Col. Guy A. Stratton, head of the manpower mobilization section, estimated that there is a current shortfall of about 1,200 Marines needed to fill positions in upcoming unit deployments.
The call-up affects Marines in the Individual Ready Reserve, a segment of the reserves that consists mainly of those who left active duty but still have time remaining on their eight-year military obligation.
Generally, Marines enlist for four years, then serve the other four years either in the regular Reserves, where they are paid and train periodically, or they may elect to go into the IRR. Marines in the IRR are only obligated to report one day a year but can be involuntarily recalled to active duty.

According to Stratton, there are about 59,000 Marines in the IRR, but the Corps has decided to exempt from the call-up those who are either in their first year or last year of the reserve status. As a result, the pool of available Marines is about 35,000.
Up to two years on duty
The deployments can last up to two years, but on average would be 12 to 18 months, Stratton said. And each Marine who is being recalled will get five months to prepare before having to report for duty.
President Bush authorized the recall on July 26. It is the first such recall since early 2003, when about 2,000 Marines were involuntarily activated for the initial ground war in Iraq.
“Since this is going to be a long war,” said Stratton, “we thought it was judicious and prudent at this time to be able to use a relatively small portion of those Marines to help us augment our units.”
He said the Marines may continue to tap into the IRR for as long as the war on terror continues. Some of the military needs, he said, include engineers, intelligence, military police, and communications.

Unreal, this is horrendous.. I think we are seriously headed for a draft, I guess that is one good way to fix social security. But, I'm sure this is the "liberal" media's fault.

I read this yesterday and am very surprised this hasn't happened sooner. There are men that have been to Iraq and Afghanistan 3 times and simply dont want to go anymore. You have to ask yourself when your luck is going to run out. I will be pissed if I get that damn letter in the mail, but you have to do what you signed up for. If I have to go, I will because of my fellow Marines.

I called my old recruiting office yesterday to find out more about it and they said it will be for certian jobs like infantry and artillry and tanks. they also said that if you served your 8 years that you have nothing to worry about. I was actually trying to find out how I could recalled. but I am not elligable. And I am a grunt!!! WTF.

according to what i read it is for communications, MP's, i don't remember seeing anything about grunts, which didn't sound right to me, so I would believe you Dannyboy about it being grunts and artilery. I am very suprised that this didn't happen sooner myself. I wouldn't worry about the draft making a comeback. I don't think any of the high ranking officers want to see that come back, they would LIKE to keep our military stay voluntary, as would I, but who knows. That is a "left" scare tactic, in my opinion. I have been out for, can't believe this, 13 years now, but I am very willing to go if I ever did get called up. I wouldn't like to leave my wife and newborn son, but I would be willing to go over there and serve again and drop some steel rain on the bastards.

maybe you didn't see the news when they found a bunker full of WMDs. And to protect freedom somtimes you need ot go the the enemys door and get them before they get you. the last thing we want is a nother situation were we are attacked and we sit back and say " we should have got him when we could" Freedom is not free and the price is blood. I don't know if you ever served your country or had family that did but we do it for each other and so that are childeren don't have to. Sempre Fi!!

Once again, WMD was one of several reasons why we went into Iraq, if we hadn't have gone in when we did, we would be dealing with two madmen in that region trying to get nukes and that are haborers for terrorist organizations. Also, there were several other countries intelligence agencies saying it was a "slam dunk" that he had WMDs. Even his own generals have said he had them up until the invasion, then he shipped them out of the country. I will tell you that a large majority of the soldiers over there believe in the mission and the cause for why they are there. So sick of the Bush lied bullshit!

The troops who went to Afghanistan went to fight those who detroyed the towers. They went to fight for America's security.

The troops who went to Iraq are neither fighting for American freedom nor security.

His own generals have NOT said he had them. In fact, those responsible for their production said they were not produced AT ALL.

That being said, I agree fully that many of the troops believe in the mission and cause.

That cause is about creating a counter weight in the Middle East to counter efforts by Syria & Iran from attaining regional hegemony. It is Nation Building. Creating a country in the image we dictate for the purpose of countering ideologies we find wrong/repulsive.

It is *not* about:
- American Security
- Freedom
- Peace

It's simply the new version of the Cold War.

Now, if you don't agree with this, I can live with that. Everyone is entitled to be wrong. However, this is the stated agenda of the Administration. (Bush in his most recent press conference called it the Democracy Agenda, if memory serves)

YOU COMMENTED ON IRAQ I SIMPLY RESPONDED. DON'T BACK PEDDLE NOW

I did not backpeddle.

Going into Iraq has NOTHING to do with making sure terrorist attacks on the United States never happens again.

Is that unequivocal enough for you?

Again, this simply had nothing to do with the invasion and occupation.

THEY HAD A MAJOR PART OF IT. I SAT IN MANY A BRIEFING AND LISTENED TO THE INTELL AND THE COMMANDERS INTENT AND THE COUNTER SCENARIOS. DON'T TELL ME WHAT IT WAS ABOUT. IT ALL STARTED IF YOU REMEMBER OVER HIM NOT ALLOWING UN PERSONALL TO CONTINUE THERE SEARCHES AND INVESTIGATION. IT WAS THE CATTAPUALT TO THE INVASION IT GAVE US A REASON TO GO AFTER HIM BEFORE HE SENT HIS TERRORIST AFTER US WITH A WMD

I remember quite well how it started... The reasoning was irrelevant. Removing Saddam had been planned since before Bush walked into office.

Which, by they way, I am not claiming is WRONG. But it's just the way it was.

Again, this had NOTHING to do with the invasion.

If this were the reasoning (pre-emptive strikes is what you are talking about) then after we attacked Afghanistan, we would have attacked North Korea first, China second, and Iran third.

Those countries are far greater threats to US security than Iraq ever was.

Congress authorized the war, the lies you have bought into from the media are BS, and therefore, there is no chance in hell Bush could be convicted of a crime, because there is no crime. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Yeah, that is true. His actions are not even vaguely approaching treason...not even remotely.
