As far ND goes...If I'm not mistaken Autry Denson is Notre Dame's all-time leading rusher with something like 4318 yards. So, although he may or may not have been a Top 10 college back, statistically he's Notre Dame's top rusher. Denson averaged 95.9 ypg in his career, which second to Allen Pinkett's 96.1. Denson numbers are better than the likes of Bettis and Waters in college, check the stats.
Great (by great, I mean productive college careers not, Top 10 finishes among yearly leading rushers) college backs out of the south since 1999 (so what, seven years)...Thomas Jones, Shaun Alexander, Jamal Lewis, Travis Henry, Duece McAllister, Clinton Portis, Edge ('98...I think), Willis McGahee, Lee Suggs, DeAngelo Williams, Julius Jones, Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown...I didn't even go back ten years or include the likes of Cedric Houston, Mewelde Moore, Cedric Cobbs, P.J. Daniels, Eric Shelton, Frank Gore, Jerious Norwood, Gerald Riggs, Ciatrick Fason, or Andre Hall (all of whom are in training camps across the US right now). Believe me, there are many more RB from the south on NFL roster than this.
In that list...A 2,000 yard back, NFL TD leader, and I don't know how many Pro Bowl appearances.
I don't think a region of the country has more NFL running backs than the south. I live in the south...I am not a big fan of the SEC, but I don't believe their is a conference in college football that has better RB than the SEC. If someone could please prove these statements wrong...I wish they would.
So, there it's over. ND may not have the best luck with southern backs; however, one is their all-time leading rusher. But the South produces both great college and NFL running backs...you do the research.
