There's your reason. How many other schools did he have a losing record against?

It's the SSDD with Michigan. Since they blocked ND's joining the Western Conference in the early 20th Century, they've had a burr under their saddle about us.

I think ND and UM should continue playing, but maybe less often. In other words, I think Bo has a valid point. Given that the Big Ten schedule is a killer (O$U, Iowa, Wisconsin, Penn State) nearly every year, you don't want more than one tough non-conference game. It would benefit Michigan if that glamour game, at least some years, was against an opponent outside the midwest, a Florida school, LSU, Oklahoma, something like that, a matchup like Texas-O$U: those games are great events for both schools. This is obviously less of an issue for ND, which has more national games every year.

All Michigan coaches have some kind of inherited hatred towards ND. Ever hear the rumor that Gary Moeller left Notre Dame completely off his final Top 25 vote in 1993, thus helping give F$U the title even though we beat them.

Responding to comments by current U-M coach Lloyd Carr, who in December said he supported a postseason playoff system -- "I think we should play the top 16 teams and do it on the field; I think that's only fair to the guys that play the game" -- Schembechler said:

"He's just talking. It sounds good. He doesn't want a playoff. I'll speak for him. He doesn't want a playoff."

Maybe he should start play calling for Carr too! Old man needs to go sit down on a bench and bitch about those young troubled teenagers running on his lawn.

I disagree. I think a 4 team play off would work great. Just to ensure that 1 & 2 play each other...eliminate the controversy.
