Sophomore wide receiver Antonio Bass has been progressing extremely well in his recovery from a severe knee injury, U-M coach Lloyd Carr reported Tuesday in Chicago. There's only one problem – Bass' Michigan career might be over. That was the first bombshell of the Big Ten football meetings, casually delivered by the U-M head coach to a handful of beat reporters.
Carr, prior to going in front of the entire Big Ten media, told Michigan-based scribes that Bass had done very well over the summer in getting himself into his rehabilitation.
"He's doing extremely well," Carr said. "The knee is coming along really well. Rehab's gone extremely well."
That was the good news. The bad followed immediately after.
"There is a test that they're going to take in the next couple of weeks involving another [knee-related] issue," Carr offered.
Carr noted that Bass is not preparing to play this season, regardless of the results of the test. When pressed about Bass' future, the Michigan head coach acknowledged that it really hinges upon what the doctors find out in the upcoming examination.
"It's an important test, in terms of his future as an athlete," Carr said. "The test is going to clarify that issue."
Bass suffered an undisclosed knee injury prior to spring practice. Carr has stated it involved running while conditioning.
