Okay, that is freakin' hilarious.

I started this thread because two friends of mine and I are having the discussion. I gave my list above and one of my friends states that my list was B.S. because any list of athletes should include Jerry Rice. I told him that my list was of the greatest sports "figures", i.e., those people who changed their sport and the world in general. In his words, "those who transcended their sport." In my opinion (and now his) Jerry Rice cannot be included on any such list - he did not transcend his sport. In addition, according to him, any person who was on Dancing with the Stars probably defined his way off of any such list.

We then went on to discuss greatest athletes - Rice probably has to be included on that list, at least according to his statistics.

The greatest receiver of all time did not transcend the sport? This is the guy who revolutionized playing the slot receiver position, and not just playing on the outside like all the other great receivers. He also worked harder on his conditioning than almost all other players, thereby having the athletic ability to play a skill position into his 40s, and STILL be a factor.

Look, I'm a Raiders fan, and I despise the niners. Even despised Jerry Rice for almost his entire career. But, any list without Rice as one of the greatest sports "figures" is not valid.
