hey,
i was just wandering what the odds of notre dame landing a decommit are this year. i saw a rumor of gary gray visiting this weekend which was quickly shot down but it made me think of a few guys who have popped up at times. these rumors never seem to stick around for long. it seems like ND has cooled off on McCray, might still be pursueing gallipo, and it wouldnt seem ridiculous to be going after gray he is a five star cornerback. this also brings to mind the mustain story. so far the school hasnt taken any decommits, parmalee has said they handle it differently. so what do you guys think? personally id take any of the three stated above.

It happens but it doesn't seem to be the prime time players that fall ND's way. Seems it's mostly players in the 3 star to sleeper range that end up as decommits to ND with a couple of exceptions but I don't recall a Galippo caliber (say Top 3 at their position) making the change. And I don't recall a prospect decommitting from a primier program to come to ND.

Prince was a decommit last year from Iowa

Richardson was a Duke or Wake Forest verbal.

Morton was an early verbal to A&M but felt they deceived him about his planned major so he jumped to ND for - academic reasons. Morton is the highest profile candidate (#1 Center, 4 stars) I can recall switching to ND.

The ND Admission Process makes it difficult for a prospect to jump to ND as ND's requirements exceed the NCAA minimums. A face to face meeting between a prospect and Admissions and/or a faculty member is common. For someone like Galippo who's already visited campus that may have been taken care of but for someone like Gilchrist who's never been on campus it becomes an obstacle. Likewise ND has to review a prospects transcripts unlike StateU that accepts the NCAA Clearinghouse carte blanche.

We seem to have more prospects that have switched away from ND than jumped onboard and I'd hazard a guess that was most likely due to - academic reasons, ala David Terrell.

The Willingham termination led to some decommits but that's not unusual when a coaching change takes place.

Short answer to your question, the odds of a decommit to ND are low.

The odds of a prime time prospect decommitting to ND are very low.

But the possibility is much higher with Weis than under Davie, Willingham or even Holtz. There was acrimony between the Holtz/Cerrato team and ND Admissions. Constant and frequent battles. Holtz had a legacy of scrapping with administrations/management throughout his career. Davie might wimper but he owed the Administration. Willingham was stoic but owed the Administration.

Weis like Parshegian didn't need the ND job. They both had bright futures wherever they went. Weis has worked hard to build a team relationship with Admissions and the Administration to examine potential academic casualties on an early basis so the prospects can add courses on a timely basis or retake a course or test to improve a grade to test score. That's behind the conditional offers being made this year. Prospects that would have been evaluated as seniors and rejected for academic deficiencies are now being looked at as juniors who still have time to make academic adjustments to get into ND as opposed to being written off as they were in the past decade. Weis isn't lowering the bar or bringing in recruits through the back door but rather pointing out to prospects on a timely basis what they need to do academically if they want to wear a gold helment. He's maximizing the potential talent pool.

I having been telling my friends down here in Indy that I thought we would get at least one big time recruit that decommits from another program. We might get two now as GG wasn't on my radar.
