Before everyone annoints Clausen as the next great QB sure fire starter at Notre Dame, let me throw out a couple of names off the top of my head. One I'm sure you guys are very familiar with Ron Pawlus and the other is Brock Berlin. Both were sure fire, can't miss #1 QBs in the nation when they came out of high school. But guess what, they missed. They both had decent careers but nothing spectacular.
Don't get me wrong I would love have Clausen at South Carolina but the kid is going to have enough pressure on him already. He would probably benefit from redshirting a year and then maybe even being the #2 guy after that. Sitll gives him 2 or 3 years to start depending on whether or not he would go pro early.
Pawlus started for a few years at ND. He broke every conceivable passing record at ND. This in spite of playing a good chunk of the time in an option offense and in spite of having little help by way of wide receivers. Not to mention shattering his collarbone before playing a game.
If Beano had never made the two Heismans prediction, opposing fans would hardly remember much about him. As it is, they like to use the Pawlus-Clausen comparison to try to take the wind out of our sails and make themselves feel better. But they do so with little actual knowledge of how Pawlus' career actually went down.
No offense to you, SC. It's just an old comparison that really means nothing.
We're pretty much guaranteed to have a hotly recruited and talented QB on the field in 07. And he will be coached by a pretty good guy for getting the most out of his QB's. At this point, who that QB will be is irrelevant.
As I stated in another thread...I will never worry about three positions under Weis, TE, WR and especially
QB.
