In doing some analysis of the Miami recruiting situation, it appears to me that Martez Wilson and Robert Hughes will not get an offer from Miami unless they miss out on quite a few of their current targets.

Miami only has 15 open scholarships and there appears to be up to 3 kids possibly transferring. Larry Coker also confirmed he only planned on taking 15-18 kids in a recent interview, so we'll run with that number.

Right now, Miami has six verbals for the Class of 2007:

Damien Berry DB 5-11 197 4.46 Belle Glade, FL
Nick Fanuzzi QB 6-3 200 4.6 San Antonio, TX
Harland Gunn OL 6-2 320 5.2 Omaha, NE
Phelon Jones DB 6-1 185 4.4 Mobile, AL
Chris Perry DT 6-3 319 5.1 Keller, TX
Demarcus VanDyke ATH 6-0 161 4.3 Miami, FL
Kayne Farquharson WR 6-2 185 4.4 El Camino, CA (Juco)

That leaves them (without any transfers) with 8 more ships to give out to equal 15. The Miami staff currently has 40 offers out to players, 39 of which haven't given a verbal with 1 being a verbal to Ole Miss.

Looking back to at Miami's last couple recruiting classes, they are loaded at linebacker, so there is very little need to recruit the position hard. Their entire linebacking corps contains no seniors at all, with 4 juniors, 3 sophomores, 2 RS freshman and one incoming freshman in the mix.

Unless something drastic changes or they lose prospects to other programs, Martez Wilson will not get an offer to play at Miami. Likewise for Hughes, as the running back position is similarly stocked like the linebacking position.

Miami's class should feature a lot of offensive linemen and wide receivers, as they under-recruited those positions the last couple years and have no depth at those positions. They are also keying in on the DT and Safety position, so both kids will probably have to look elsewhere.

One more thing to note. Miami seems to recruit positions in cycles. When they have depth at one position, they don't take anyone there and overload another position. They rarely have a balanced class. This also is one reason I don't see Hughes or Wilson getting a look unless something goes wrong with their other offers.

The thing I'm worried about is the possibility that Miami comes to the realization that Wilson is just too talented to give up on. It's unlikely, but they could offer him as a defensive end, though I'm not sure what their situation is at that position.

I'm bothered as it seems there's too much time for things to change against our favor.

They're awfully loaded at running back from what I understand, so Armando Allen and Robert Hughes should be pushed hard.

Tez Wilson brings up a good point that a childhood favorite doesn't always mean the best situation now. I think he, more than anyone, has to take this whole process in a bit more because of how fast he exploded on to the scene.
