After Jimmy Clausen committed, he spent part of his trip talking to recruits such as receivers Duval Kamara and Arrelious Benn and tight end Mike Ragone, trying to convince them to join him at Notre Dame.

It makes for a great start. All those superstars that were here have Notre Dame in their top three, including defensive tackle Marvin Austin and defensive back Major Wright. Now Notre Dame has a bead on a core group of great players that could make it No. 1.

Charlie Weis will be going to visit ND's top targets. He'll also be visiting camps and he's going to the high schools of all the great players. Ragone's coach told me that Weis will be at the school on May 1. Weis is telling Ragone that he can help make Ragone the next Jeremy Shockey, so Ragone is really interested. Weis will then make his way across the country over the 20 days he's allowed to be on the road.

Not many head coaches are doing that. The only two I saw last year out nationally were Urban Meyer and Weis. I think it'll be the same story this year when it comes to the coaches at the 15 major powers.

At the end of May they start getting ready for their summer camp. Their one-day camp will put the finishing touches on who Notre Dame will have as its top priorities going into the fall. They'll get these kids out to the one-day camp, and 99 percent of the time the kids they want to offer are offered within a day of leaving the camp. They'll tell them they're going to offer and they'll pull the trigger the next day.And that will be almost the entirety of their offers. They'll add a couple later in the year just because kids pop up, but they'll know who they're going to zoom in on.

In July the coaches can take a bit of a break, but there will be kids making unofficial visits with their parents. The coaches need to be aware of that.

Notre Dame has two outstanding on-campus members of their recruiting staff in Ron Powlus and Dave Peloquin. They're both Notre Dame grads and they know every nook and cranny of the campus. Those two are the unspoken heroes during the slow summer months. They take kids on the tours and they're a main ingredient in this class.

After the one-day camp there will be some curious recruits that Notre Dame will in turn be curious about. That's where Powlus and Peloquin come in. Then the coaches come back in earnest.

I think Notre Dame is so far ahead and I believe they'll have almost all of their offers out right after the one-day camp is over in June. Marginal students are the kids they won't offer. They'll be told that Notre Dame wants them, but admissions has to accept them.In my opinion, it would be great for Notre Dame if they had between 12 and 15 of their 25 commitments before the start of the season.

There will always be kids who are going to wait. It doesn't matter how much they like you, they're going to wait. Notre Dame's coaches did everything well last year, but they learned their lesson on the Gerald McCoy situation. They were waiting on McCoy and couldn't pull the trigger on Butch Lewis. Lewis ended up at USC and McCoy went to Oklahoma.

This year I think they'll have more players in reserve. A lot of times, patience brings you a No. 1 class. Pete Carroll and Mack Brown always seem to land a great player or two at the end because of patience. They know the great players cannot be pushed or bullied into a commitment. So patience can be the key.

If Notre Dame learned a lesson on patience, this could be the best class since 1990. The groundwork has to be completely laid before the coaches take off for vacations in mid-June. July is probably the least important month except for text messaging and hand-written letters.

Some great assistant coaches have made their marks during July with letters. From the mid-'90s on, Notre Dame suffered during the summer and by the time September rolled around they were out of the race for a lot of players and they didn't even know they were out of the race. They were dead in the water and didn't even know it.That's not going to happen now. The recruiting atmosphere and the recruiting mindset and their approach to it has been set up completely by recruiting coordinator Rob Ianello and Weis. Everything has been set in place for them to finish close to No. 1 every year as long as Weis keeps his energy.

A lot of people say a certain school does well because of two or three great recruiters. That's true. But without a doubt Notre Dame does it because of Charlie Weis.

They can't afford to get complacent. A staff may think it is doing great and it's got 40 targets and it'll get 25. It almost always never works that way. You've got kids you're going to lose and all of a sudden you've got to find someone. They've got to have backups to those 40, at least 35 kids. You've got to keep the B-list guys thinking they're A-list guys. They've got to be strung along until the A-list guys make their decisions, which normally come later in the year.

It's important to have 75 guys on the list so you can get one of every three. If they take the 75 best players in the country and they get 25 of them, how could you help but not be No. 1 in the country?

But some kids you can't read. Sometimes you lose them. Some kids know how to play all the coaches and everyone thinks they're going to get him. That's why it's so important to keep evaluating tape and to keep offering guys you really like and stockpiling offers. I'm a firm believer that even the powerhouse schools should offer 75 to 100 quality guys, members of the top 200.Notre Dame is a little different than the other schools because of academics. Out of the top 100 nationally, they can normally go after only 50 or 60 of them. So for them it would be 75 of the top 150. If they had any weaknesses last year, they didn't have a ton of backup plans, particularly at defensive tackle and linebacker. That was the big bugaboo.

I know one thing for certain, we need to get Benn on board ASAP to have a legit chance with Marvin Austin. So Jimmy, if you're reading, call and text Benn to death!

Some good comments from both Benn and Thompson.

Quarterback's Pitch: Play With Me at Notre Dame

By THAYER EVANS
Published: June 1, 2006
During a break in his Algebra II class recently, the nation's top-rated high school quarterback casually flipped open his cellphone, began typing on its keypad and then pushed send.

Gene Kaiser/The South Bend Tribune, via Associated Press (top); Aaron Houston for The New York Times
Jimmy Clausen, a top-ranked high school quarterback who has selected Notre Dame, often called Duval Kamara, above, who will also play for the Irish.

Thirty miles away, a speedy defensive back felt his cellphone vibrate. Sitting in anatomy class at St. Bonaventure High School in Ventura, Calif., he sneaked a peak.
"GO IRISH," it read.

"Quarterbacks," said the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Michael Williams, who has a scholarship offer from Notre Dame. "I guess they do that."

Jimmy Clausen, the highly regarded quarterback, had already started introducing himself to the country's best prep football players before announcing at a news conference at the College Football Hall of Fame last month that he had chosen to play for Notre Dame in a year and a half instead of the University of Southern California.

Clausen, who is 6-3 and weighs 195 pounds, passed for 2,778 yards and 30 touchdowns last season as a junior for Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, Calif. He could break California's prep record of 132 career touchdown passes in the fall.

He used to initiate his telephone calls and text messages to players in Florida and Maryland with a self-assured greeting: "I'm Jimmy Clausen, one of the top quarterbacks from California."

Now that he is preparing to enroll at Notre Dame in January, his calls and text messages include a pitch about joining him there. He said he specifically talked to players about the university's football tradition, academics and Coach Charlie Weis.

Clausen said that Weis was the main reason he had decided to attend Notre Dame, but that Weis had not pressured him to contact recruits.

He said that he did not contact players every day, but that on some days he sent as many as four text messages and made two telephone calls. He said he routinely stayed in touch with a group of eight players at least once every two weeks.

"It's going to be their decision," said Clausen, 18. "I'm just trying to establish a relationship and try to tell them how special Notre Dame is and try to get them to come in as well as the other guys that have committed to bring Notre Dame back to where it's meant to be."

Regarded as more talented than his older brothers, Casey and Rick, both of whom played quarterback at Tennessee, Clausen is keenly aware of the impact he can have on Notre Dame's recruiting.

Tailback Marc Tyler, who rushed for 2,196 yards and 39 touchdowns last year, lives with Clausen and has also been offered a scholarship by the Irish.

"I can't do it all by myself to win a national championship," Clausen said. "I need everybody around me."

His college announcement at the College Football Hall of Fame, just a mile and a half from Notre Dame, took place five hours before the Irish's annual Blue-Gold spring football game, which attracted many recruits.

Clausen said he obtained the telephone numbers of the players during visits to colleges and from Internet recruiting analysts.

"The big thing is that great players want to play with other great players," said Jerry Crabtree, the national recruiting editor for Rivals.com, a network of college sports sites. "We've seen it at Texas. We see it at U.S.C. We saw it at Florida State and Bobby Bowden when they made their run to the top of the recruiting rankings. With Clausen, you can expect Notre Dame to go out there and have some success at the skill positions."

Securing Clausen further signifies Notre Dame's budding re-emergence as a national college football power. Last year, the Irish went 9-3 in Weis's first year as coach, an improvement of three victories from the previous season.

With senior quarterback Brady Quinn returning and a favorable schedule that features seven home games, Notre Dame is considered a prime contender for the national championship next season.

N.C.A.A. rules prohibit Weis from commenting about Clausen until he arrives on campus, but Clausen's decision to attend Notre Dame helps ease questions about whether Weis's blustery demeanor would turn off elite recruits.

Clausen's commitment to attend Notre Dame already seems to be paying off for the Irish. Less than three weeks after Clausen announced his decision, Notre Dame received a commitment from Duval Kamara, a prized 6-3, 190-pound wide receiver from Hoboken, N.J., who chose the Irish over Miami, Penn State, U.S.C., Virginia and Maryland.

The university has six oral commitments, according to IrishEyes.com, a Web site devoted to Notre Dame athletics. Oral commitments are nonbinding. The first day a letter of intent can be signed is Feb. 7.

Kamara said that he and Clausen had had at least 10 conversations since they first talked in March. He said the relationship did not necessarily deliver him to Notre Dame, but he admitted that the prospect of playing with Clausen made the program even more appealing.

"He's supposed to be the LeBron James of football," Kamara said.
Mike Ragone, a rugged tight end who attends Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, N.J., and who committed to Notre Dame eight days after Clausen, cited him as one of three reasons he chose the Irish.

"It was definitely a factor," Ragone said. "He's the best quarterback in the country."

Jamie Newberg, national recruiting analyst for Scout.com, a network of college sports sites, said: "You get a guy like a Jimmy Clausen who's arguably the top player in the country and he's going to be a magnet for other kids. We've seen the domino effect with other schools and prospects in the past. He's certainly going to be an extraordinarily huge factor in what they do in recruiting this year."

Oklahoma enjoyed a similar boost when quarterback Rhett Bomar committed to the Sooners in July 2003, the summer before his senior year, which was considered an early coup. The Sooners then reeled in a top-10 recruiting class that featured four fellow U.S. Army all-Americans, including the junior tailback Adrian Peterson.

The players Clausen has contacted say they appreciate his interest.

Deonte Thompson, a 6-foot, 190-pound wide receiver at Glades Central Community High School in Belle Glade, Fla., said he frequently talked to Clausen and often received text messages from him.

Thompson, who has more than 20 scholarship offers, including from Miami, U.S.C. and Texas, said: "I want to go to a school with a quarterback that can deliver me the ball. I think he can do it."

Arrelious Benn, a 6-2, 205-pound wide receiver who attends Dunbar High School in Baltimore, said he was impressed with Clausen's initiative. The two met at Notre Dame's spring game last month.

"I love him," said Benn, who is also looking at U.S.C., Florida State, Miami, Maryland and Illinois. "He's a good guy."

Clausen's courting of his fellow Californian Williams has posed one quandary. Their schools are scheduled to play on Sept. 22.

"He's my opponent, so it's kind of weird," said Williams, who is being recruited by a host of schools, including Michigan, U.S.C. and Arizona. "I mean, you're friends with your opponents off the field, but this is kind of strange, because we kind of have somewhat of a heated rivalry."

That won't deter Clausen.

"The main reason why I'm talking to these guys is to make them comfortable with me, because I am the quarterback and the quarterback is usually the leader on the team," he said. "If they feel comfortable with me, I think they'll feel comfortable with coming to Notre Dame."

People can say what they want about the limo and the announcement...but this kid is sharp. He gets it. I suspect it helps to have advice from his brothers, etc. But the more I hear about him, the more thrilled I am that he came to ND. He seems to be a very good rep for the program as well.

He hit on one point that I think is key...he talked about being comfortable with the QB. Brady Quinn, Matt Leinart, etc...have all shown just how critical that really is. A good QB is refered to as a General on the field. If guys feel comfortable with the QB they are likely to trust him and have a high confidence level that they will win.

If he can lock in on Benn, Tyler, Miller and Wilson....what a cast he'll have around him.

Thompson or Little would be just fine with Benn and Kumara.

Wow, if we got all them, I could even have some success at QB for ND.

We don't really have a chance at Thompson, do we? I'll admit that besides knowing he is very talented, I havn't followed his recruitment, namely because Notre Dame hasn't been mentioned too much in the process.

We need to get Raeshon McNeil on Greg Little.

Well you never know with these kids, if you think back to last year I don't think many thought Sam Young would be Irish. It' s a long process and as long as he still has interest in ND then you cant think he wouldn't commit to ND. As long as Jimmy keeps working the phones it will be an amazing class.

Although I've been following ND since the Theismann era, this is the first year I've actually found access to Irish recruiting information. I'm surprised to see how much time and effort is involved in this process and I can't help but be very proud of Clausen for his earnest efforts at recruiting. Along with the pressures of being a top recruit in the nation, he seems to be working tirelessly to lay down the groundwork that might become the difference in another recruit's mind. That, coupled with Weis' charisma and prowess at developing young talent seems to be a great combination for ND's future.

I'm definitely excited at witnessing the early recruitment process that will become ND's core group of stars over the next half decade.

What are the chances of getting Benn? Because I don't have a good feeling about him.

I'm not worried yet, but if Clausen wants to win 4 national championships, he better keep at these kids and Charlie better as well. And the key is in Brady Quinn's arm. If he wins the heisman this year and takes ND to the NC or another major bowl, it will open the flood gates for sure.

Did Raeshon McNeil go to the same school as Little?

Nope. McNeil went to Davie County High School and Little goes to Hillside High School. The schools are over 100 miles away from each other.
