2014 Pro Bowl features new format for NFL all-star game - NFL.com

I don't know about you, but this makes me want to actually watch a Pro Bowl game.

Some major changes are also being made to the game itself:

» Game within the Game -- A two-minute warning will be added to the first and third quarters and the ball will change hands after each quarter. This will increase the opportunities for quarterbacks to direct "two-minute drills," which are especially exciting for fans.

» No Kickoffs -- The coin toss will determine which team is awarded possession first. The ball will be placed on the 25-yard line at the start of each quarter and after scoring plays.

» Rosters -- The rosters will continue to consist of 43 players per squad. The kick return specialist will be replaced by an additional defensive back.

» Cover Two and Press Coverage -- The defense will be permitted to play "cover two" and "press" coverage. In previous years, only "man" coverage was permitted, except for goal line situations.

» Stopping of the Game Clock -- Beginning at the two-minute mark of every quarter, if the offense does not gain at least one yard, the clock will stop as if the play were an incomplete pass. This rule will make the team with the ball attempt to gain yardage toward the end of each quarter.

» Game Timing -- The game clock will start after an incomplete pass on the signal of the referee, except inside the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half.

» Play Clock -- A 35-second/25-second play clock will be adopted instead of the typical 40-second/25-second clock.

» Sacks -- The game clock will not stop on quarterback sacks outside of the final two minutes of the game. Currently, the game clock stops in these situations outside of two- minutes of the second and fourth quarters.

Seems pretty cool...but confusing as hell.

Just get rid of the thing and vote guys as all-pros.

I'd rather just watch skills challenges and stuff like that

This. Just do a combine competition essentially.

I remember on ESPN a few years ago they did a completely unrelated skills competition where guys played dodgeball against each other among other things. I'd literally rather watch that than the pro bowl.

I like it. Reminds me of elementary-school recess football, with captains choosing their own teams on the spot. The Pro Bowl can't get worse than it is right now, and this seems like it could be a lot of fun.

There was a lot of talk about doing away with kickoffs last season(concussions/injuries). I wonder if this is an experiment to see how it plays out.

Unrelated skills competitions would be fun to watch. Like an OL/DL pie eating contest. I'd bet some good money on Bryant McKinnie aka Chubby McChubbins taking that one.

I'm amazed that so many people still tune in to the Pro Bowl. The last 4 Pro Bowls have averaged ~12.6 million viewers:

Just totally copied the concept from the NHL.

True. But it does make sense for the NFL, considering how wildly popular fantasy football has become.

I wonder how the new pro bowl selection process will affect the number of "snubs," considering there could potentially be 6 AFC QBs and 0 NFC QBs in this format, for example.

the whole thing is a testing ground for Goodell and co. to tinker with the game. I dont like the way this is going and I am sure the players will hate it.
