Frazer or Jones Red Shirt?

If you were a quarterback going to Notre Dame would you jump at the chance to red shirt in order to spend five years with Charlie Weis.?

Either Zack Frazer or Demetrius Jones can do no better then third on the depth chart, so why not red shirt for the 2006 / 2007 season to maintain a year of eligibility for the 2010 / 2011 season.

Based on Jimmy Clausen’s above average age (I think he'll be 23 years old his junior year in college), his stated desire to be an NFL quarterback and the possibility that if he is as good as advertised he could be the starter his freshman, sophomore and junior year there is a chance that he could forgo his senior year for the NFL Draft.

Than the starting qb spot could be left to the one who red shirts and a QB from the 2008 class for the 2010 / 2011 season.

I realize plans change and to project what high school player are going to be like in three to five years is not an exact science but I don’t doubt for a minute that the brain trusts of Notre Dame Football have a best case scenario QB for the foreseeable future because Charlie Wies doesnt want to win a National Championship, he wants to win multiple National Championships.

That'd be a weird twist of fate if Frazer ends up succeding a guy who came in after him.

I think you're wrong about the depth chart for next year though, I doubt Jones will be ahead of Sharpley as a freshman. Maybe if (God forbid) something happens to Brady and Sharpley comes in and stinks it up for a few games, then I could see Charlie going to one of the rooks, but I doubt either of 'em will start the season ahead of Sharpley (and maybe even Wolke) on the depth chart.

My guess is neither of them see the field this year, and both end up saving a year of eligibility.

Clausen is guaranteed nothing. He's got to beat Jones out. From what I've heard, that isn't automatic. I have more faith in him beating out Sharpley and Frazer. But Jones is supposed to be special. He may have to be switched to a different position just to get the most out next year's roster.

We don't redshirt...we just give guys who didn't play at all a fifth year, that way we don't lose them for the whole season. If they play they play, but if not...they are all but guaranteed that fifth year.

I don't see Clausen beating out the Jones/Frazier combo....

IMO Clausen will be Redshirted his Freshman year and will be a 2 year starter in the end

i am a HUGE zach fan, dont ask why-i really doubt (i respect your opinions but...) Frazer will be behind EVERYONE in '06'07- i know its not all definite yet, but youve gotta understand, summer practice will be the big tell apart time-i think frazer gets 2nd to 3rd spring, and if Charlie told him "Be ready to compete for back up job this year" would he be redshirted unless he plays terribly in summer?

You think Jimmy is gone after 3 years?

If Clausen starts as a freshman and wins any titles, or a Heisman, or anything, he's gone after 3 years. Which is fine. But considering his age, and why he's here (to win, yes, but mostly to become a top NFL choice), he'll want to win and go.

This is a big assumption. Clausen will be a freshman, and you think he'll start immediately? He'll have to beat out a Sr (Wolke), Sharpley(Jr) and two All-American Soph. Thats a pretty big assumption.
