They got what they wanted...wins over Michigan and in bowl games, the sustinance that John Cooper could not provide.

Maurice Clarett is the big black eye, but for me it is too early to tell as to whether this program is running amuck off the field the way it was under Cooper.

It isn't going in the right direction.

I don't blame Tressel for Clarett. In watching him post-OSU, it is clear to me that the dude was a borderline maniac without any semblance of a brain.

In the end, this was a great move for Ohio State. Call him what you want, but until the NCAA drops the hammer on them, there is no substantial proof of any cheating. That said, he wins on the field, wins bowl games and puts lots of players in the NFL. They have quite the program over there in Columbus right now.

I think this move by O$U is a bit premature. Next year will probably be the last for some time that they have a legitimate shot at a national title---if they beat Texas, they're probably headed there (scUM travels to Columbus).

OSU's recruiting is pretty decent, but I don't think it's as strong as it has been in the past, so don't be surprised if they go from being 'very good' to just 'good'.

Chris Wells will do a lot of damage, though.

They do very well in Ohio, but they compete against mostly MAC schools there. Still, they keep plenty of good players around.

I'm sure I'll get hammered for saying this, but Tressel is doing a lot of little things at Ohio State the same way Weis is at Notre Dame. I don't think Cooper embraced Ohio State the way Tressel is doing. Just as Weis is grasping Notre Dame and presenting it for what it stands for, Tressel is getting people involved again...keepig tradition going.

He understands why it is important to beat Michigan. I think implementing the singing of "Carmen Ohio" after games with the fans is a brilliant move on his part. And Oglaigh, you're right about one thing: for all the cheating they're supposedly doing, they're coming out clean on the other side.

Svo, the Clarett thing had Tressel connected to it. While I agree that Clarett was trouble wherever he went (Ty offered him), it brought past allegations against Tressel back to the surface. A lot of people were cynical towards him, myself included. As far as what he was hired to do on the field, he's come in and done it.

Tressel is solid. It's hard to argue with Ohio St. for locking the guy up. Now he's a pretty high paid coach.

Anyone have a list of what coaches make per year? I wonder where Charlie is on that list? Or Spurrier? Or Pete?

He's earned it on the field, that's for sure.

I hate to say it, but you are right.

Let's face it, he has done a stellar job of getting OSU into the top ranks...and keeping them there. He is sending guys to the NFL left and right. He's beating UM. He's in the top rankings a lot...

They owned us in the bowl game...

I am no Tressell fan (I do believe he had some hand in the Clarrett affair)...but as a coach he is top notch.

Jigga,
You SHOULDN"t be bashed for saying that about Mr. Tress-calade. I think you're spot on. Besides, he was at Youngstown St. before tO$U, so he's very familiar w/ Ohio. Didn't know that about Tress-calade's singing ability. That is a very savvy move. Just like Pom Pom Poodle, he's taken moribund/mediocre traditional powers and put them back in the elite (if MackBrown has a good year, same could arguably be said about him).

Poor Cooper had people cutting down trees in his yard after he'd go 9-3.....some people are just bad fits and others fit like gloves.

Don't tell me I'm the only Buckeye hater left around here! Let's not forget that after Tressel won several I-AA Championships at Youngstown St, right after he split for O$U, Youngstown St. was busted for NCAA violations and placed on probation. And given his Youngstown connections, Tressel knew exactly what he was getting in Clarrett, so that scandal is totally on him.

(Sigh) I guess I can't expect you to understand the intense molecular level hatred I have for an Ohio $tate jUnior college.

Tressel is not doing things the way Weis is, in that Weis isn't running a dirty program. Maurice Clarett + a history of Tressel cheating = a dirty program.

I want to win, but not that way.

Yeah, ND does not have a history with OSU. 5 games in 120 years...

That being said, I can't stand the Buckeyes, but he got them to win...and win big.

He may/may-not be dirty...but he did deliver the wins they so desperately desired.

He did cheat, and is likely cheating still, and so his winning means nothing. When you cheat in sports, your accomplishments become meaningless - even those things you would have accomplished without cheating are made meaningless, fairly or unfairly. See Bonds, Barry.
