INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA approved four new bowls Thursday, including a fifth Bowl Championship Series game in Glendale, Ariz., which will host the national championship Jan. 8.

The other new games are the International Bowl, which will be played in Toronto; the Birmingham Bowl, and the New Mexico Bowl.

The postseason football licensing subcommittee approved 31 games, three more than last season, and delayed a decision on a 32nd - the Houston Bowl - until June.

Representatives from the Big 12, Big East, Conference USA and Mountain West asked for the delay because they want better management of the game.

"It is this subcommittee's goal to provide the best experience for student-athletes, coaches and staffs, and the fans and to support the long-term viability of the bowl system," Mark Womack, the subcommittee chairman, said in a written statement. "We had to make some very difficult decisions, but we feel they are decisions made in the interests of a successful postseason."

Bowls that were renewed for next season were: the AutoZone Liberty, Capital One, Champs Sports, Chick-Fil-A, Emerald, Fed Ex Orange, Gaylord Hotels Music City, GMAC, Independence, Insight, Pioneer Pure Vision Las Vegas, MasterCard Alamo, Meineke Car Care, MPC Computers, Motor City, Allstate Sugar, Outback, Pacific Life Holiday, San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia, Fort Worth, Rose, AT&T Cotton, Hawaii, Tostitos Fiesta, Toyota Gator, Vitalis Sun and New Orleans.

The subcommittee said nearly $192 million in bowl revenue was distributed last season and that about 1.4 million fans attended last season's 28 bowl games.

They're playing a bowl game in Toronto. CANADA!!!???

Now I have seen it all.

Soon, you won't even need a winning record to play in a bowl game. All you'll have to do is walk and chew gum at the same time.

I can honestly say I care about the National Championship, the other three majors and wherever ND is playing. Other than that, two 6-5 teams duking it out in December doesn't not gain my viewership.

Why can't they just make the Cotton Bowl the fifth BCS game? Is there something wrong with it?

I was a big supporter a few years ago when there was talk to add a 5th BCS Bowl...that being the Cotton Bowl. I believe that the Cotton is one of the best bowls that no one gives any credit to. In my opinion there should be only around 10 Bowl Games, 62 teams going to bowls is way to many!

Can you say......saturation? There's already too many bowls now. I agree with the above sentiments. The Cotton Bowl should have been the fifth BCS bowl.

How in the hell are they going to find 8 more teams to play bowl games? Are they taking 6-6 teams now? I-AA teams? WTF.....

Fantastic. Let's add a FEW More to that!!!!

How about the Stay Free Maxi Bowl. They could play one PERIOD, that period could last an entire week, and everyone has to be miserable.

Believe it or not there is a pretty good amount of Interest in NCAA football here in Canada and I guess NCAA officials wanted to tap into this market.

When will this end? Soon, every team will be going to a bowl game. Let's see, there are 119 teams, so that means we only have to have 60 bowl games. We're on our way! Then Temple can go to a bowl game every year! They'll go to the "Who Gives A Crap Bow". Go Owls!!!

Six bowl tie-ins for the eight-team Big Least? Another example of the rampant proliferation of crappy bowl games:

The eight-team Big East Conference will have at least five -- and could have as many as six -- bowl tie-ins starting next season. The two new bowls in the Big East lineup are the International Bowl, which will be played Jan. 6 in Toronto and pit the Big East against the Mid-American Conference, and the Birmingham Bowl, which will be played Dec. 23 at Legion Field and matches the Big East against Conference USA.
