USC Trouble = ND Recruits?

Now I know we all feel so terrible for the misfortunes that USC may have to face. However, could their lack of control be a recruiting windfall for Notre Dame? Would this be a cause for USC recruits to abandon ship? Can Pete do enough damage control to keep his current verbals and continue getting new ones? USC has asked the PAC10 to investigate in my opinion to divert a full NCAA investigation, but I think the NCAA will be involved in short order. Even if nothing came of it, which I know it will, just the implication is going to drive recruits away.

Now with Clausen committing to ND and the next day USC under investigation could this send more recruits ND's way? What players are we recruiting head to head w/USC and Pete Carroll?

I think this whole USC thing could turn out very well for Notre Dame. It's amazing how a short weekend can really improve your programs future.

Thoughts?

I think it's possible if things start heating up (assuming the NCAA has the balls to actually investigate... I don't think they do). Prospects like Chris Gallippo will have another major reason to look at alternatives, namely Notre Dame.

But, is that really how we want to bring guys into our program?

If this is an agent issue and not a school issue, the punishment would (if actually enforced) be making him retroactively ineligible from the time of the infraction on, thus forfeiting any games he played in during that time. I doubt much would happen as far as USC's future.

Not knowing much at this time, it really does sound more like an agent issue. It's entirely possible that USC themselves had no wrongdoing here. At least provable wrong doing.

True, however, it does place the scarlet letter on USC... even if it is indirect because it is one of their prized players, Mr. Heisman Trophy himself. Things like that stick in the back of your mind, especially where there are equally attractive options.

SC is going to get the top talent in California year in and year out.

Now so far this year, UCLA and ND are ahead of them in terms of verbals to this point.

Notre Dame needs to grab Marc Tyler and possibly steal Galippo. Otherwise, Carroll will get the top Cal kids, some Jersey ones and they appear to have opened a little pipeline in Texas.

But he'd better not bite off more than he can chew.

USC's recruiting went very slow last year. Folks were proclaiming the gloom and doom scenarios all year long. Then along comes February and an excellent class. They'll be fine. The Poodle can recruit. This rivalry is going to be competitive and a lot of fun for awhile.

Still, there is a chink in the Trojan armor, and this would be the time to exploit it. Even IF USC is clean. Now did Reggie live in the house and just have his mail sent to a USC number? Is the house around USC?

The house in question is in Spring Valley, CA, near San Diego, well outside commuting distance to USC.

I don't care how we get guys. Once we get them, the winning will follow and that will work as a recruiting tool in itself from that point on.

Yes, we won't need the misfortune of others in order to get wins.

Of course we don't need to feed off the misfortune of others. But if someone is cheating it's hard to call it a misfortune. It's doggy eat dog out their and when your running a clean program with high academic standards these ND recruiters are wearing milk bone underwear. I say sell this USC bump to the hilt. I think we can get them anyway but if it gets them in it's ok w/me. Sorry, that's just my opinion.

I've read comments in the past from recruits about ND's coaches not stooping to negative recruiting and them being impressed by that. It shows class. I'd rather they stick to that.

TOTAL Agreeance. We ARE and SHOULD BE different than the Spoiled Children's, scUMs, U BICH's, PSUs, t0$Us, Duh Us and the Society of the Ethically Challenged (aka SEC).

CW should continue EXACTLY what he and Co. are doing on the recruiting trail and on the field. Keep a few steps ahead, keep up the relentless pressure to excel and then get better, whether it be recruiting, playing or in the classroom. He/they/we do that and we'll have no need for any negative recruiting.

The other 118 Div-1A schools are realizing that ND IS BACK and is a player again, EVERYWHERE. It's like they're waking up from a near decade long Mardi Gras celebration, where the partying was great, but then realize that they've drunk way too many hurricanes.

Ok Ok, no need brow beat me into morality submission. I agree, if USC has trouble we don't need to tell them, they will know on their own. We are back!

Bad mouthing your competitors is a HORRIBLE sales method in any endeavor. It makes you seem intimidated by them or gives the impression that you're insecure because of something to hide.

Sell Notre Dame. That's easy.

I never suggested bad mouthing anyone. I just felt this might be the time to give our USC recruits some addition attention. USC might be doing the damage to themselves.

i'm picking up what you're laying down, irish4life99. CW doesn't need to say a word for a kid to see that So Cal is taking some heat on this issue right now. And if that turns them off and causes them to look elsewhere, so be it. Charlie will be there waiting, and they can rest assured knowing that he'll do things the right way.

We're not saying we can't benefit from it. Simply that it would be classless mud slinging for our coaches to play it up. The situation speaks for itself. ND doesn't need to stoop in order for recruits to consider it.
