I think a lot of Irish fans discount Jones’s ability to throw the football. I’ve watched a lot of “athletic” quarterbacks in my time covering recruiting and Jones can throw the football with the best of them. In my eye, Jones is much more polished throwing the football than Vince Young was at the same stage, and likely why Weis wanted Jones.

Lately, I've been very impressed with the content of Irish Eyes and Scout.com. Mike Frank does really good work with his analysis of recruits and their film.

I posted this portion of an article he posted today. You may or may not recall how touted Vince Young was coming out of high school. Myself, Big Don and a few others have believed for some time Jones will end up being the man at ND. With some polish and bulking up, Jones will be the starting QB the next time ND wins a National Championship.

The more I hear about this kid the more excited I am to see him play. I know only time will tell, but it sounds so far that Zach Frazier is gonna have to fight to get playing time. Which is not a bad thing.

I just posted this in another thread, but Jimmy better watch out if he comes to ND. He might have to transfer because Demetrious is the next start at ND.

i agree DJ is the real deal, in his junior year he threw for 2,300 yards 21 TDs and only 3 Ints. as far as throwing the ball he and zach frazer are almost dead even. i agree, i think DJ will be a good player.

I just hope he totally heals from that rotator cuff injury.

Chad Pennington has had that injury twice now, and people are saying his career is over..

What matters is what they do when they come here.

That said, either Clausen or DJ could be ND's next starting QB or even Frazer. This might sound incredibly naive and it probably is, but Clausen has received too much hype for him to not be as good as DJ.

I think it will come down to which style Weis wants to incorporate at ND.

Well, I'm not sold on any quarterback since I haven't seen them play at this level, but I gotta believe Clausen takes over when he gets here. I'm drinking the kool-aid with this kid, but I just can't shake all the hype he brings. His "potential" says he'll be a superstar heisman winner, 1st round draft pick, nfl hall of famer. But potential is a really funny word.

Yea they say he is the best quarterback to come out of southern cal in the past decade and the top overall player in this class. i think he will start for ND over DJ

Clausen will start, Jones will be shifted to WR, Sharpley will opt for baseball, Frazer will be a glorified backup who doesn'y play much, ala Matt Cassel, and David Wolke will be thankful to have an ND degree........

But, Vince Young is still not a great thrower per NFL combine workouts. A great runner, YES!
Frazer is the NFL style thrower that Weis and Cutliffe both liked.

DJ is a great runner and can throw, but, will he develop like an NFL passer?

My money is on Frazer at this time.

I'm sticking with DJ. A great runner doesn't mean you can't pass.

I like Jones at QB for us and I would not be surprised if Frazer transfers if Clausen comes to ND. Frazer has NFL qualities and I don't think he will be content to sit on the bench.

Isn't it great that we can talk about the BEST coming to ND? It's been a long time since that was food for thought.

Why is it that evertime a kid can run around a little bit he is labeled as not being able to throw the ball. DJ put up crazy numbers passing fellas. And obviously Weis was probably pretty high on him too otherwise they would have took Mustain at the end of last years recruiting.

Let's face it... it's because he's black, African-American, noir... however you want to say it. How many times did you hear that Tim Tebow, who is more of a runner IMO, couldn't throw the ball when at the Army All-American game?

NONE.

You shouldn't hear it about Demetrius, either.

Exactly

I hope he comes in and breaks every record. Not because he's black, but because he seems to be behind Frazer and even Clausen already before they even step on the field, and before Clausen even picks his destination.

Mike Frank is suggesting that Jones is better NOW than Young was when he was a senior. And Vince Young might go #3 in the Draft? If Jones is a better thrower now and has Charlie Weis to develop him, I like the odds of Jones progressiing as a faster rate than Young did.

A couple of things to keep in mind: two weeks ago, Charlie Weis flat out told John Chiles, a dual threat QB, that they were recruiting him as a WR.

That discussion never happened with Demetrius Jones according to Jones and Weis.

I honestly think the odd man out will be Sharpley, unless he wins the #2 job in spring. Otherwise, he might switch to baseball.

The Matt Cassell to Zach Frazer analogy was a good one.

Another thing to keep in mind about DJ is his attitude. Everything I've read about him and heard him say suggests he believes he is NOT coming to ND to COMPETE for the QB job. He believes he IS the QB!

No offense to Frazer but that kind of confidence is hard to beat.

I doubt Frazer or Jones would transfer, they both seem to love ND. If Frazer ends up riding the bench for 4 years he could still be drafted because he has the size and arm strength to play in the NFL, not to mention a great teacher. The NFL would take into account ND's abundance of great QB's.

Sometimes college players don't see the field because someone else is better, doesn't mean they themselves can't play in the NFL.

Transferring rarely seems to work out, especially for QB's. The last QB I can think of who had that work out for him was Troy Aikman

Everyone is on Jones and forgets Weis and Cutliffe liked Frazer and both agreed he was No.1. Jones is good, but Frazer had a tough year. Let them compete.

I don't think it's because Jones is black. I think it goes by whom Weis and Cutliffe liked 1st. That was Frazer. Frazer had a tough year, lost senior players and played with many underclassmen. His coach said he showed great leadership this year. Now some people just dismiss him. Frazer, like Jones, is also one heck of an athlete. Maybe he's not outspoken like Jones, and maybe he's not as good as Jones, and maybe he's better than Jones. That's a lot of maybes. What difference does it make, they're both ND men and we as fans are happy to have them. Let them both compete and it will work out for the benefit of ND and both QB's.

The only reason I want Jimmy, is because he come with a lot of baggage, i.e. he is the domino effect in recruiting

Demetrius Jones quote from a Mike Frank article on Irish Eyes/Scout:

”I’m just waiting,” Jones said. “I wish I would’ve graduated early. I talk to James (Aldridge) and George (West) all the time. They’re loving it there right now. They’re getting ready for spring football and I’m just working out and going through my playbook.”

His shoulder is feeling much stronger as well.

Bob Chmiel had this to say upon viewing D. Jones' tape:

"Prior to reviewing this tape I had heard that there was question as to whether he was a quarterback. Please let me know who asked those questions. I need a word with them. The first time I saw Jarious (Jackson) break a huddle, his confidence, leadership and presence jumped off the screen. That is exactly what I saw in Demetrius."

Chicago Hubbard fullback Robert Hughes had this to say to Edgy Tim.com

"I'm going to head up to Notre Dame with Double D (Demetrius Jones) on Saturday to check out an Irish spring practice."

Jones, The Ambassador, has even started working the juniors.

Jiggs, it looks like Jones can be the next Aldridge in the recruiting game. Everyone in Chicago knows him and this should give ND a great boost in that area, Years ago Chicago was a gold mine of talent for ND and that has been missing for a long time. You have posted about that several times.

And for those who think Clausen (if he comes) will run DJ and Frazer out of a job better tell that to them because DJ KNOWS he is going to be the QB. Don't know about Frazer but he has the tools.

OK Gary Gray, get on board.

Martez Wilson from Simeon and Miles Stroter from King are the other two city kids I like. ND has interest but not offers for either at this point. Ditto on Hughes.

A car ride with Jones and Hughes would be interesting. Morgan Park (Jones) and Hubbard (Hughes) are huge rivals. Both are major powers in the Public League and will be tough in 2006 again. Hughes quote kind of surprised me because of this.

But Jones is already in Golden Dome frame of mind.
