Randy Rodgers Breakdowns QBs for Rivals

Reviews Mustain, Stafford, Freeman, Demetrious Jones, and Isiah Williams

Demetrious Jones
Has good size and thickness. Excellent runner, who has tendency to tuck and run when pressured. Definitely a scramble-to-run QB, but may be at his best when protection breaks down. Ideal for the spread offense because he is a definite running threat. Needs to improve his velocity. Didn't have many hard throws in his offense, but does have good accuracy. Would like to see him "gun" more throws, but does have good arm strength. Will need to improve his ability to find secondary receivers when he gets to college, because defensive athleticism and speed will catch up. I really like his mobility and all his mechanical needs can be improved on when he reaches college. Will need to red-shirt.

Randy Rodgers' QB Comparison:
Of the QB's that you have given me, I would rank Mustain and Stafford well above the others. They are ready to play at the college level. Mustain is technically more sound, Stafford may have better velocity, Mustain is a better running threat. You can take first pick and I'll take the other. I see Freeman as strictly a pocket guy, Jones and Williams as more athletic. I think Jones has the best mobility, the most ability to make plays with his feet, and by far the best runner. It will be interesting to see how Charlie Weis tones down Jones, but he is a major talent athletically to play in that kind of system. Williams will also need to red shirt to improve on mechanics.

If he red shirts will he ever see the field in a gold helmet?

There are limited snaps available for the #2 QB and very little for the rest. He'll arrive on campus this summer and have preseason camp and the scout team during the season to improve his mechanics, adjust to the faster level of play in Div 1, learn the system, and adapt to Weis's style of play while Quinn closes out his career.

Five months later Jimmy Clausen steps on campus already declared the best QB in the nation by most of the posters on this board. The Saliva Level on those posts indicate that Jones, et al will be wearing a basecap and a clipboard for most of their careers.

Jones (or Frazer) has to claim the #2 slot this summer (while hoping that Wolke and Sharpley don't lock it up in Spring Ball) if they are to get meaningful practice snaps and PT prior to Clausen winning the Heisman as a freshman.

1. I don't care how hyped or supposedly talented a recruit is, they are not guaranteed anything and are question marks until they play in college. I'm pumped about the possibility of Clausen, but it's way too early to pencil him in as a starter as a true freshman.

2. Injuries happen. Say Frazer/Jones starts as a soph and tears up a knee in the second game. In steps the other one (assuming Lord Clausen deems it to be so, of course.) Injuries happen. We've been really luck thus far.

3. QB's develop differently. It could happen that next season for example, Frazer is deemed the most ready as a backup and Jones is held out to conserve a year of eligibility, though his upside is decided to be huge. Maybe in the offseason following, Jones makes great strides in mechanics, knowledge, etc and his upside becomes too much to keep him off the field.

The point is, it's way too premature to pencil in any depth chart for 07 and beyond based on what we have now. Heck, for all we know, by 2007 Sharpley could be poised to become the next Joe Montana.

Is Clausen that much of a sure thing to ND?

No, and even if he were, he's no lock to play as a freshman.

Randy Rogers has red shirted Demetrius Jones?

Hmm. Interesting.

This is the same guy who in another thread said that Sam Young wasn't in Steve Schilling's class. They're the two best O linemen in America.

I guess it is one guy's opinion.

I can tell you right now, if neither Booty nor Sanchez can get the job done at SC, you'd better believe Pete Carroll would do a Nancy Kerrigan number on his own mother to get Jimmy Clausen. I'm actually hoping for Sanchez to win that job and do well all year (minus ND, of course). It will then add Clausen into the mix for ND a bit more.

ND's QB spot will be wide open. If Sanchez establishes himself, I don't think SC will be as appealing.

Can Clausen enroll early and win the QB spot at ND in 2007. I believe he can. He has to pick ND first. Then he has to learn Weis' offense. That said, he might not win the spot until later in the year.

But let's get him first.

Personally, I'd prefer Booty wins the spot. It's just more fun to say.

Besides, wouldn't you like to see our DL sack some Booty?
