I don't enter the politics threads, so I wouldn't know about the disagreements there. And sure, there's some disagree about which player we should recruit, who should start, etc. Outside of Rees, I rarely thought the disagreements got heated.I think this warrants some discussion.
To me, it's all about being intellectually honest vs. dishonest. Do you actually believe what you are saying? I'ts not about having contrasting viewpoints. For example, the political threads are full of tons of disagreement. And you often see tons of disagreement on individual recruits or player or things like that (e.g. Ebenezer Ogundeko, Bruce Heggie, Mauk vs. Kiel). And there was a guy who no longer really frequents this board named NDOM who was probably the most negative poster I've ever seen. People really had zero issues with him and he was around for years.
So what's the issue with ALLGATOR then? As I said, I defended him for a long time because I thought he just had a different opinion than everyone else.... then the Sugar Bowl happened. That's when it became painfully obvious that he just posted here to annoy people and didn't actually believe a word he typed. Maybe you think that is fun, I don't think that adds anything to the board at all. But I'm not a mod so it's not really my call on how this whole banning thing works.
There have been tons of Michigan fans, Ohio State fans, and even the occasional USC fans that lurks/posts here and don't get banned. I remember I got into an argument with one Michigan fan about Purdue's defense being better than Michigan's... did he get banned? No, because he was being intellectually honest and not just posting with the intent to annoy. And it turns out he was right and Michigan's D was way better and I told him as much after the fact. So this board certainly isn't intolerant of opposing viewpoints from fans... all that is really asked is you post with civility and don't intentionally troll for the sake of trolling. ALLGATOR did the former but failed on the latter, IMO. So I sure won't cry seeing him gone.
Those things (what's in bold) don't bother me. I find them amusing. In a perverse way, it forces posters here to support their arguments and make better points.
The board isn't intolerant of other viewpoints, but as noted in by others in this thread, they don't get as much leeway if they sidetrack a thread, especially if they're trolling. Plenty of threads get sidetracked with memes, which in many ways amount to positive feeling trolling.
Not a big deal either way if the board doesn't allow it. I just wanted to in a way vote for keeping some trolls around because I find the dynamic they provide amusing.
I visit ShaggyBevo too, although thats mostly for their humor.
