As one living in the south, that is not always the case... I have seen first hand and been told 1st hand stories of things after 1964 that would make your hair curl. It still is obvious today what some people think of other people. Racism is alive and well on both sides of the spectrum.

...Because this ONLY happens in the south. There are people in Philly that are as racist as any southern would dream of being.

"Equality of opporunity" will never be realized, as long as people are born in different bodies, in different cities, to different parents.

I think this has no bearing on interviewing and hiring the best available option.

Affirmative action is a joke.

And it is alive and well.

As a child, you probably grouped like colors in marbles, candy etc.

We are visual creatures. We notice difference.

But deep down, I don't think people think they're entitled to more or less due to their race.

It depends who you surround yourself with people-wise I guess.

You are including race in that "difference" category?

Well, people tend to gravitate to those that look like them.

It's natural. And that doens't mean someone is "racist". Just means their comfortable with people that look and are interested in the same things as them.

It's like cliques in high school...jocks hang with jocks. Black jacket kids hang with black jacket kids....etc

So we have reached a point in America where whites are discriminated against at comparable level?

Or is it enough racism against whites to say that there is a problem?

Not sure what you mean, but you don't have to in order to understand the point. Even white male twins will have a huge difference in opportunity when born in different cities to different parents.

Isn't it a little odd that a rich, African American female will get more of a "bump" in college admission or employer "diversity" than a white man who's been raised by wolves? Where's the equality of opportunity there?

I think that's been met years ago. For both in my opinion

"Whites are slow. They have small peters. They always want to be the boss. They're liars. They work together to hold others back."

These are just a few I've heard recently.

Good point, I especially like the wolves part, it shows just how much the white man has to struggle against to be treated fairly...

But I ask this, from we can all agree that at least starting in 1864 and ending in 1964, blacks for the most did not even have the chance compete with whites. And it and nothing to do with determination or natural ability, agreed? So how was that problem solved in later years?

There should be a rule where each NHL team needs to draft one black hockey player each year. Not enough color in the NHL.

I say it's a problem if it's against whites, blacks, hispanics...etc.

And what happened in the past, happened in the past. Neither you nor I lived back in the slavery days, therefore, I can't really "identify" with that argument. Hell, I wasn't born in the 60's either....

So I can only defend and comment on what I see and hear now. I don't run a tab on who is ahead or behind on racist stuff.

And I think that people have overcompensated for what happened in the past, which has created this "PC" enviroment in which everything offends everyone. It's ludicrous.

Should we start listing the success stories from black youth? Or the young black business owner from the bad neighborhood?

Besides, what should we do about it? I mean, I don't understand what you're getting at?

I believe we will achieve equality for all when we do away with the fallacy that all men are created equal. The truth is all men are created differently. Like snowflakes, not two of us are exactly alike and the color of our skin is a very minor difference. When we learn to truly celebrate differences is when we will achieve equality for all.

Everyone struggles in their quest to be the richest man in the world. When you don't make it there will be many to blame, but the #1 culprit is not being born to the right parents.

This problem is by no means confined to non-whites.

I'm asking you. You seem to be in search of one.

I think that we've made leaps and bounds. This country gives it's citizens the greatest opportunity in the world (despite what the news may say) no matter what color or background.

When we try and pin down a defining moment, it doesn't do justice the progress we've made over time. Some could say Obama being elected was the "moment"....but I don't agree. I think it's more of a collective of attiude change over the years that defines our progress.

I was not limiting my statement to the south, merely my opinion shaped by living here.

If you have time I would be interested in your thoughts on this progress over years. Starting with the freedom from slavery to make it easier.

Puritans arrive in america.
Puritans racist to Native Americans and try to civilize them.
Puritans become American English citizens over time with an expanding immigrant population.
American Citizens and immigrant population racist to Native Americans, and blacks during westward expansion.
Irish Immigration ( are you familiar with "Irish need not apply"?)
Chinese Immigration in the west (interesting history on Chinese miners and discrimination)
Slaves Freed (Jim Crow Laws)
Even though Blacks free, Civil Rights Act required for equality nearly 100 years later...

I'd say on the racism front we are proceeding fairly slow.

This is definitely not reserved to whites. I have seen my fair share of racism from others.

As far as I am concerned I don't think legislation is the answer though there is a reason we have it in the first place. It could help but as with all rules there are those that bend them, those that break them and those that heed them.

Hmm let's exercise our brains here a little...

Blacks freed from slavery in 1863

Civil Rights Act passed in 1964

So what year was America's ideal of "equality of opportunity" realized?

You are including race in that "difference" category?

Serious or joking, I'm on the fence, so I have to ask?

So because let's say all, for the sake of argument, black athletes became millionaires that was America's great solution?

No.

Your posts in this thread make you seem like you're trolling.

Look, I don't think you're a troll, but just go ahead and state whatever opinion you have. Offering nothing and essentially asking others for definitive proof for or against racism makes you seem like you're trying to bait.

So tell me which question is irrelevant to race?

And I like that you compare me to Allgator and then say "I don't think you're a troll".

My opinion is that when discussing race in America it is almost impossible to get rational people to think rationally. A strange fruit indeed...

Think rationally...or agree with you? I think everyone here has been pretty rational.

And you haven't stated any opinion on the matter. I'm interested to read your thoughts as we've all posted some of our own.
