The Irish are playing in the Fiesta Bowl. And my only thoughts are a yawn. I have absolutely zero interest in this game. The game is meaningless. My biggest concern is that some key piece of 2006 team will suffer some catostrophic injury while playing a pointless game.

I want to care. I just can't. The BCS and other conspirators have sucked the life and passion out of post-season college football.

Help me care. I want to care - I just can't find a reason to. Love of team isn't enough. I love the Mets but I don't watch exhibition baseball. Tell me how this isn't anything but exhibition football.

Its the bowl season..if you can't get up for that then something is wrong. Not only that but ND is playing OSU something that doesn't happen everyday. Who doesn't love the bowl season?

If for nothing else, this Fiesta Bowl should serve as a big ol' "UP YOURS" to all of the haters and doubters (ESPN, Mark May, Jay Mariotti, Corso, etc...) who said that ND would start 0-6, do not deserve to be in a bowl game, Weis would struggle in his first year as ND head coach, Willingham should have been given more of a chance, and other ridiculous takes that the stooges in the media have made over the past year. With a win in the Fiesta, we can basically take our huge Irish foot and plant it in all of their collective ND hating asses.

Baseball is so boring that in my eyes, even the world series doesn't compare to Fighting Irish Football. Don't you want to see Brady Quinn go out and show America that he should have been at the Reggie Bush ceremony. (Oh I forgot its called the Heisman.) What about all of the Seniors, and Anthony Fasano. Do you not want to see all of them go out in style. Or maybe you have forgot about the Fight Song. Don't tell me that you don't get goosebumps when you see the players coming out of the tunnel and that song starts playing. I could go on even more, but hopefully this will help.

Guff,
You're right. The game is meaningless. If we win, we can all chant "We're number 2 or 3 or 4..." whatever. (Insert the obligatory "all of our potential recruits will be watching" argument here)
Here's what's in it for you. This game means a lot to OSU and the Big Eleven in general, mainly because they hate ND, and they have a serious inferiority complex. So, I propose the "addition by subtraction" method of enjoyment. Aside from the obvious pleasure one might gain from watching their team play well, seek true enjoyment from your team making some of the world's most obnoxious and uncooth fans feel like shit. ...unless you live in Columbus, in which case, put your cars in the garage, board up your house and keep all flammable substances locked up.

And don't forget about the chainsaws, lest something happens to your trees, a la John Cooper....

College football has existed for almost 120 years. During those years, it has grown into one of the top 4 sports in American, and arguably the one that sparks the most passion. At no time during those 120 years has there been a playoff for D1A. There have always been bowls and exhibitions. Yet the fire grows even today.

College football on its own, especially Notre Dame football should be enough to get you excited. We're waging war against those heathens from Cowtown. Isn't that enough?

First, I hate the idea of these so-called 'playoffs.' The whole season is a playoff. The idea that you could lose a game and still play for anything meaningful makes me sick. Also, no top academic schools have ever participated in post-season football play, and I believe ND would be obliged to refrain from doing so as well (much like the Ivies refrain from participation in playoffs).

As for bowls? Bowls are about playing the top teams in the country against one another because that's supposed to be fun to watch as a reward for both the players and their fans. That's all bowls have ever been about. These contracts that create worthless games (an extension of conference championships that leave Colorado #2 or FSU #1) are the real problem. Now if there were..say...five bowls pairing the top 10 or so teams in the country against one another, that would be interesting. The only actual good games to even consider watching this year are the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar, Gator, and Peach, though I am curious to watch PSU's performance.

Yes, I'm going to have to find a way to avoid the midnight 'Catholic hunt', where mobs of drunk OSU fans chase us with torches.

Back to the subject, though. I was born and raised to be an Irish fan and have been since day one. I can't tell you how much trash-talk I've had to put up with from die-hard OSU friends.. I've been waiting for this rematch ever since the last one in South Bend. My brother once told me that since ND - OSU wasn't scheduled, that we'd be lucky to see them play just once in a 40 year time-span.

But now I have my matchup... and I can't wait to return to school on Tuesday with all the ND shit I can find.

(that is, of course, if they win)

120 years unimpeded by progress. At some point the sport has to get with the program. Even 8 and 9 year olds in soccer leagues end their season with a tournament. Name another sport that doesn't end it's season with a tournament.

The bowls used to be great. When there were only a handful of pre Jan. 1 games. Then it culminated with non-stop college football on Jan 1 - Rose, Cotton, Orange, Sugar and Fiesta Bowls. All football, all day. Even then it wasn't about the games; it was about getting together with family and friends while football played in the background.

The only way to change the current system is for us - the consuming public - to stop consuming. Otherwise the BCS will continue to feed us this sh!t sandwich. And BCS sycophants will say "I love eating sh!t on rye".

This isn't about ND. It's about the system. I don't know if I can endorse the current system with my viewership.

I don't see whats wrong with the BCS..yes its not perfect but still its something. What is so wrong with it, the two best teams in the country are playing 1/4 for the national title...the way it should be. Oregon showed that it did not deserve to be in a BCS game as did Miami last night. Its not perfect but nothing ever is this system is patchwork, its not good but not terrible. Go Irish Beat Buckeyes!

How about that Peach Bowl last night? Boy, that sure was something. The best non BCS game of the bunch? Barf.

I thought Nebraska and Michigan lived up to some of the pub that game was getting. The winner of that game would go in one direction, the loser in another. Nebraska will be back....SOON. scUM is going to go through a down cycle soon. Changes will be made.

Oklahoma playing LSU in the Sugar Bowl a few years back.

Nebraska playing Miami in the Rose Bowl a few years before that.

If you can't win your own conference, how can you play for a national title? How can you end the season with 3 unbeaten teams?

Clearly, some things need to be worked out. There are too many bowl games. A 6-5 team is not a good football team.

I wish the Cotton Bowl was relevant again.

Get to a doctor immediately....I suspect you're missing a pulse. How can you not be up for:

- The biggest bowl game ND has played in some time
- Ohio State
- Most improved offense in college football from last year
- New coach, new attitude
- A team that didn't rely on key turnovers to win (as happened in Ty's breakout season) resulting in a record that was better than the team actually was.
- Most of all....you're a ND fan. This is our reward for being faithful fans.
