LOS ANGELES -- A high school football coach who was videotaped cheating during a game will be banned for life from coaching, athletic officials decided.
The videotape showed Paul Bryan, a 23-year assistant coach at San Pedro High School, improperly moving a marker to help his team gain a first down on a critical fourth-down play late in an Oct. 28 game against rival Gardena High. San Pedro, which is in the harbor area of south Los Angeles, scored on the drive and won the game, 13-12.
The rules committee of the California Interscholastic Federation's L.A. City Section announced Wednesday that it had slapped Bryan with a lifetime coaching ban.
"The section is making a huge push to get people to realize that character development through high school sports is extremely important and part of the education process of the student," section Commissioner Barbara Fiege said. "It appeared to (the committee) there was a meditated decision on the part of the coach to go over to the chains and ultimately to move that chain."
Bryan can appeal the decision, she said.
He declined to comment on the decision other than to say he planned to hire an attorney.
San Pedro High last month suspended Bryan for a year.
The rules committee has not closed the matter. Committee members said they were concerned that head football coach Mike Walsh apparently waited nearly two weeks after receiving the videotape to give it to his boss.
The videotape was shot for a rival school that was scouting the game.
San Pedro won the Marine League title and advanced to the quarterfinals of the L.A. City Section playoffs before losing to Sylmar High School last week.
