Opinions/Discussions on Guns

Well, I'm happy you have no power or influence gien you are not a US citizen. Yesterday you told me I needed to give you "good reason" to have a gun and that I HAD to put it in a safe. Today you support having a gun for home defense as long as I keep it where "you" want it. That's a sweet deal.

You have no room to question anyone's heart in this matter. Using that logic anyone who disagrees with your ideas supports everyone having 5 guns and is in favor of more innocent people dying. You don't lay out the options for everyone else here on your own. You don't get to define other people or their beliefs.

What would you be advocating if Lanza did something else? What if he had homemade pipe bombs? What if he put a toxin in the ventilation system at the school? Newtown broke the hearts of the American people and innocent children died. No one wants it to happen again, but the ideas you propose violate the rights of law-abiding gun owners who did nothing wrong and will do nothing illegal.

Going back to yesterday: no politician or law has the legal power to control the price of ammunition. I don't know what the hell you people do in Canada, but that crap won't fly down here.

As frustrated as you may be with others on here, imagine those who are trying to have the same discussions with you even though your "ideas" and "propositions" and laws up there do not translate to our laws here. Just sayin...

He didn't (do anything else).

And your signature, is about communism not socialism. You just kind of changed that on your own, didn't you? Communism: THAT IS WHAT STARTED IN 1917; when you change the "ism" you should find the date that makes the statement accurate enough not to be nonsensical on that point alone.

Please explain how "that excuse doesn't hold water anymore". The initial ban was for 18 specific semiautomatic weapons. The new "updated" ban calls for over 100 weapons including shotguns and handguns. I understand that technology has greatly improved since 2004 when the ban expired and I'm sure that there are more than 18 types of specific assault rifles on the market now but the last time I checked shotguns and handguns weren't assault rifles. The gun control crowd has been stating that "we" need to get the assault rifles off the street. Yet they are trying to include shotguns and handguns in the ban. Which was the point of the post I was quoting and agreeing with, that if the NRA agrees to any type of ban the gun control crowd will be back for more and more.

It's simple. The NRA was all up in arms (no pun intended) when the assault rifle legislation went into effect. This was the "give up an inch and we give up a mile" mentality, yet the legislation was allowed to expire. Not only did the NRA not give up a mile, but they got their inch back.

Let me clairfy points about Vietnam and Afghanistan. If we wanted to, we could go into Afghanistan and pretty much wipe out the Taliban and the rest of the insurgents within a month at the most. We don't because we want Afghanistan to try and get this resolved with some help from us. We don't want to run other countries, we just want countries to quit harboring these guys.

In Vietnam we were fighting against the spread of communism which at that time was a very real threat to the US and world democracy. We had their a$$es kicked until Johnson called off the bombings of North Vietnam due to political pressure. Once the bombings stopped it went downhill from there.

I don't have a problem with gas station and conveient store owners carrying guns. They are easy targets.

I know guns don't kill, people kill, but what is the easiest thing to use to accomplish this? Is it a knife, a bow and arrow, or using a plastic bag to suffocate someone?

I'll repeat this again. Until Sandy Hook I was a supporter of the 2nd amendment and I used some of the same "flawed" excuses the NRA and avid gun owners like to use, but this has made me wake up. I am not for totally eliminating gun ownership, but there needs to be some major changes in the laws including the ban of assault rifles.

I've never seen anyone so obsessed with a signature. And yes, I adapted it because our nation is much closer to socialism (statism) than communism. Similarly to Phork telling me where to put my guns and listing reasons why I might "need them", if you don't like it you can live and let live. Thanks.

Fly whatever flag you will; hell launch your underwear on your car antennae. I was just trying to help you. The inaccuracy of your statement is threefold: Quote out of context; date flat out wrong and points out previous; whether you use GDP or peronal income, look at the countries that come in ahead of the US . . .

Yes, look. because I know of no other country that contains as many sucessful people as the US.

You're missing the point about what our economy is built to do. It's not to make things "even".....

I wonder what some well placed flood lights with motion detectors would do to deter this guy before he decidied to break in? Maybe even a sign showing the house has an alarm?

My company relocated about two years ago. The building we vacated (we still own) was broken into several times and there was evidence of prostitution and drugs on the outside of the building. Because I live the closes to the building, I got roped into checking on the building. I got tired of doing this, so I bought signs that state the building is being monitored. In the last six months we've had no incidents.

Yet you keep using other countries gun policies to compare to us??

Actually, I never did. I only responded to other peoples comparisons to other countries. You on the other hand, made comparisons to other countries a few pages back. Then someone pointed out that you were dead wrong on Japan, and instead of owning up to it, you quickly changed the subject to the next warn out conservative mantra.

I see that you are on free market enterprise now....

No countries are "ahead of the US" in terms of GDP. USA is #1.

I would support background checks on the entire family of anyone purchasing a gun.

I believe the gun owner should be held criminally responsible for the use of a gun in a crime, no matter who weilds the gun.

I believe there should be extremely servere penalties for anyone who uses a firearm in the commission of a crime.

I support the elimination of the "gun show" exception to the requirement to undergo a waiting period to buy a gun.

I am for a waiting period of a month or longer to purchase a firearm.

I support a ban on all assault weapons.

I do not believe that anyone's "right" to own a gun for hunting or "self protection" outweighs the right of a student to go to school, or for a teenager to go to the movies without the fear of being murdered.

Not per capita. If you go by that, we are #8.

List of countries by GDP (PPP) per capita - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But c'mon guys, this isnt a politics thread is it? I thought the discussion was suppose to be about guns?

He didn't say per capita. But even if he did, no country in the top 10 has close to the US population. It's like having the minimum number of passes before you get a QB rating -- you can't really compare the U.S. to Qatar or Brett Favre to Colin Kaepernick.

I am with you on most of these points. If owner's gun is stolen and is used the owner should not necessarily be held criminally responsible. This of course the owner reports the gun as stolen within a resonable amount of time.

The president said once the new Congress comes in he is going ask them to reinstate the ban on assault weapons that was allowed to lax after George W Busch took office.

Also I guess Biden is suposed head up some kind of focus group to in attempt improve gun violence. No specifics of what ideas they might just they are going to be looking at ways to fix this.

1) You can't. Legal barriers.

2) You can't. Legal barriers.

3) Yep, definitely on the table. Many would agree.

4) You can't.

5) You can't.

6) Yes, worth discussion and can be done, especially on a state level.

7) Remember the book Animal Farm? All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. You are not entitled to determine whose rights are more valuable than others' rights.

It is the school's legal and moral obligation to protect the students in the building. This will not be done on a federal level. Like 99% of schools, how they protect everyone inside will happen on a district or state level.

Fantastic. Noted.

And it doesn't matter what you "believe" when it comes to my rights. And explain to me how a law abiding citizen owning a firearm, prevents kids from going to school or teenagers from going to the movies?

When you can tell me how people that AREN'T breaking the law, are preventing rights of others, I'll agree.

I'll wait.

Very depressing when I'm watching CNN and a company is showing off a bullet proof backpack for children. Great idea, but so sad that it's needed.

I agree that if the gun is reported stolen, there should be some sort of accomodation made in severity of punishment. However, how many more times can a teenager or a deranged family member or friend take someone's gun and use it in a crime and the gun owner has no responsibility? Lock up your guns so nobody else can touch them. There has to be some responsibility the gun owner takes upon himself when he purchases a gun, doesn't there?

It's not needed, sold on fear. And I agree, it's sad.

I've never owned or shot a gun, but I like Texas's laws the way they are. If other states want to change their laws, have at it -- doesn't really bother me.

We went over that before....that "ban" was worthless under Clinton.

saw this too. Some down in Texas are arguing that all teachers should be armed to avoid school shootings.

How can the arguement possible be to armor our children and put even more guns around them?

I guess at the end of the day...You're right.

I mean, who cares what Illinois does, NY, or DC......We're just fine down here. Meanwhile, gun crime is RAMPANT in those places. And they have some of the most restrictive gun laws.

There's a better chance my dogs scare him away before they chew his nuts off and I can laugh while watching it on security cameras.

I also have two dogs...And you're right, they probably will scare them off. However, what if the guy shoots and kills your dogs? What if it's some meth head on a high?

I'll have a 15 round clip of .45 hollow points waiting for him while we wait for the cops.

I'm not going to be huddled in my closet, with my kids and wife behind me scared outta their minds while some psycho makes his way through our home.

Besides, what good will a bullet proof backpack do?

There are no guns around them now in schools, remember? So actually, we're trying a different way by arming teachers.

Just say to the family -- "it's ok kids, at least we know he's not carrying an assault weapon..." and everyone will be fine.

You folks in Texas better be careful. With the latino population rising fast you guys could be a liberal state in a decade, even republicans think so and are worried. You guys better start looking for ways to surpress the vote, or you know cheat. Else your state my lose some its conservative policies including those on guns.
