MANHASSET, N.Y. -- UCLA's Marcedes Lewis won the John Mackey Award as the nation's top tight end after leading the Bruins in catches and receiving yards.

Lewis, a senior, set career highs with 58 receptions, 741 yards and 10 touchdowns, all UCLA records for a tight end.

The other finalists were Maryland's Vernon Davis and Notre Dame's Anthony Fasano.

The Mackey award will be presented by The Nassau County Sports Commission in May.

No doubt he was the winner, hands down.

The best tight end in America. First tight end picked in April.

Yep, he was the best. We've got a good one, but Lewis has WR like atheticism.

May be the best athletically, but he is soft and disappears in big games. I watched that USC game and he had no intentions of getting hit if it meant catching the ball.

Put him on the Eagle now and he'd fit in perfect with that crew. It's easy to catch 10-15 passes against the Oregons and Washingtons of the world, but it means a helluva lot more against the USCs.

After hearing you talk him up, I keyed in on him for the UCLA offensive series and wasn't impressed. At all. I'd take our kid, the kid from Tulsa and a couple other TEs I've watched over him to be quite honest.

I don't think I would judge ANYONE on UCLA based on Saturday.

They were just bad.

Svoboda,

Lewis had 3 catches for 30 yards against SC. He had one catch for 6 yards against Cal.

I haven't watched the tape yet, but I'll have to zero in on him against the Trojans. Everyone pretty much sucked against SC, but this wasn't his worst statistical game of the year.

He clearly is a TE in a WR mold. This is a great attribute for the PAC10. At the next level i would want a better blend of run blocking, pass blocking and pass catching.

Coming out of high school, there wasn't much to him.

Much like Kellen Winslow's makeup, on the field that is.

If you're not on the East Coast you probably didn't get to see much of Vernon Davis, Marylands TE, and also a finalist for the Mackey. He is a special player and purported to be a first round NFL pick. Not chopped chicken liver.

Yeah, this guy went under my radar. The announcers were talking him up on ESPN when they were doing a Maryland game recently. Might have been NC State. I ended up watching a good portion of that game to check him out. Since they're not in a bowl, it was probably my last chance.

All 3 of these guys have a year left and all will probably bolt. Great trio of TE. Perhaps the Bears can get one of them.

I wouldn't forget about POPE from UGA. He's a bruiser who had a decent year as well....
