Hey guys, I am starting to take up beer making as a serious hobby. A buddy (who is a farmer) and I want to start growing our own hops and barley. Has anyone attempted this or does anyone brew their own beer?

I want to turn this into a thread where everyone shares their experiences/failures/successes so we can all learn from each other.

I was just messing with you, he's a character from HBO's Boardwalk Empire that runs the Atlantic City illegal booze operation during the Prohibition Era...I thought it would be funny, I was wrong...

I actually have a friend that does this. I will get his take and be happy to share with you!

I was thinking that I have never seen that handle on the boards before haha. Don't watch the show so it went right over my head. Thanks, look forward to hearing about it.

Damn I was just talking to a guy that does a few acres and I forgot how many cases of beer he said it would be...Next time I run into him I'll get the # because I remember it was quite a bit of booze.

Ya we were looking at different strains of barley and hops on the internet tonight and they are crazy cheap for large amounts. You could buy them for like 1.00 an ounce and I was saying that if we got like 20 ounces we could make a **** ton of beer. I would love to hear what he has to say about it all. We have almost an unlimited number of acres to use, but we were thinking about just buying a few different strains and seeing what we could come up with and what we liked best.

I am also good at drinking the beer. I once was told that if you make your hobby your work, then your work would turn into your hobby. Plus it would give me a great excuse to consume my life with beer and not be considered socially unacceptable.

I have made homebrew once before and turned out a pretty nice Oatmeal Stout. I have never tried growing my own hops or anything though. As far as the actual brewing goes it's not too difficult, hardest part is having the time and patience just to make sure you clean and sanitize everything well.

I also am acting on my desire to brew my own beer. I'm currently shopping around for a brewing kit.

I looked online and there were 2 homebrewing clubs in my area so I'm joining one of those. They meet once a month to drink and talk about the brewing process from what I hear. The first meeting is next week so it should be interesting.

I also subscribed to a magazine called 'Brew.'

With some skills - I should be the next dogfish head story (dreaming of course).

gkautz10 - feel free to message me if you want to help each other get setup properly.

The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian is not a bad read/guide for those interested in homebrewing.

I will PM you when I get everything going, it probably wont be until after the first of the year. I am actually surprised that we do not have more people on the board that home brew.
