No. 6 Notre Dame (8-2) at Stanford (5-5)
November 26, 2005 - Stanford Stadium
8:00 pm EST

PALO ALTO, California (Ticker) - Notre Dame has a BCS bowl berth in its sights but first must beat Stanford in its first road game in six weeks.
The sixth-ranked Fighting Irish can conclude a perfect road slate this season when they visit the Cardinal on Saturday.

Notre Dame (8-2) is 4-0 away from home in its first season under coach Charlie Weis but has not taken to the road since a 49-28 triumph at Purdue
on October 1.

The Irish concluded a four-game homestand with a 34-10 triumph over lowly Syracuse last weekend.

Brady Quinn completed 21-of-37 passes for 270 yards and two touchdowns for Notre Dame, becoming the first quarterback in school history to surpass 3,000 yards in a season.

Darius Walker, who ran for 123 yards and a score, surpassed 100 yards on the ground for the sixth time this year.

With a win, Notre Dame would become eligible for an at-large BCS bowl bid.
Stanford (5-5) is coming off Saturday's 23-3 home loss to archrival California in the "Big Game" in which it was outrushed, 226-16.

T.C. Ostrander went 15-of-25 for 152 yards and starter Trent Edward 9-of-14 for 76 yards for the Cardinal, who must win to become bowl eligible. The quarterbacks were sacked a combined nine times.

Stanford has lost three in a row in the series, all since former coach Ty Willingham left for Notre Dame prior to the 2002 season. Willingham lasted just three campaigns in South Bend before being fired and replaced by Weis.

I am going to be at the game, here is what i am hoping for besides a win...

1) D-Walk to get 80 yards rushing to break the 1000 yard mark on the season
2) Brady to throw for multuple TDs with no picks
3) 2 or 3 balding white men in cream color blazers and patches embroidered on the chest to be waiting axiously on the ND sideline waiting for the game be over
4) And like ALWAYS at Stanford stadium when ND is in town, a crowd population made up of the 75% Irish fans, 25% Cardinal fans GO ND!!!

I've looked at the numbers and ND had better pummel this team and leave no doubt. I"m leaving town tomorrow morning and hope to catch the game in my hotel room.

Fiesta, here we come.

Yes, I hope the boys come out tonight and lay an absolute whoopin' on Stanford. The best way to make sure we get the best bowl is to leave absolutely no doubt in the minds of bowl officials who will be making the picks.

A 50+ point performance could and would do just that.

With the exception of the Samardzjia 80 yd TD that was the worst half of football ND has played since MSU.

I'll be interested to see how they come out for the second half. Can Weis light the appropriate fire under the right asses?

What the hell is up with our kicking game. It has been terrible tonight and wasn't great last week either.

WTF Don't be playing for the GD FG, that is not a sure thing, at least look like you are trying for a TD.

HOW THE HELL DO YOU HAVE FITZ TRY THAT FIELD GOAL? The kid is hurt, this is nuts, now Stanford has scored to go ahead, I guess Charlie didn't want to go to Tempe that badly. Why can't this team step up when they need to sometimes. The ones that they should roll in they don't.

Have to score a TD now because a field goal isn't an option - please tell that I won't have to live with this taste in my mouth until January

Amazing game fellas... it is almost calming to see our players not even worried when a team leaves them a couple minutes.

Put this in the 'Win is a win' file - ND lost 14 points in the kicking game (2 missed FGs, a missed PAT and KO return for TD). I put some of that on Weis. If the kicker is injured then don't run him out there.

How do you put up 665 yards of total and not blow the other team out of the water?

Keith Jackson should re-retire. He misspeaks about once per possession at least. He was good in his day, unfortunately for him that day was yesterday.

Big numbers

Big numbers

ND finishes the season with a 3,000 yd passer, two 1,000 receivers and 10+ TDs and a 1,000 yard running back.

Will it be corn chips or orange juice? We'll know on Dec 4th.

Well, I think Charlies loyalty almost cost us the game sending a less than 100% DJ Patrick out there. Thankfully, we have Brady "Big Drive" Quinn who led a beauty that was nearly as nice as that USC drive.

Oh, and Keith Jackson made mistake after mistake. It was SAD.

It is long past over for Keith Jackson. He is a lot like Summerall, towards the end Summerall could barely keep track of what was going on. When Stanford kicked the PAT he was saying it was for the win, forgetting there was a bunch of time left on the clock. If I remember he "retired" about 8 years ago, there was a bunch of gifts and love on the air for him, and he was back the next season. Give me Nessler any day of the week.

AMEN!! Jackson even looks too old! He only does a few games on the West coast but I think that is a few too many. Hang it up !

Jackson is a legend and as long as he wants he should be allowed to do Pac-10 games..he has always had an ND bias going back to the 10-10 Michigan State game if I recall the story. This was a "sloppy" game for ND and almost a complete let down. Weis is content with saying score as much as you want we aren't going to play any defense or special teams but in the end I am going to score more points then you. I believe that for the second year in a row that Walt Harris out smarted ND.

In my opinion Quinn really bailed out Weis on this one. I know you can't use "if's" to make a point but IF ND doesn't pull this one out Old charlie boy has a lot of answering to do. Maybe he has an answer? But I can just see Kevin White picturing all those bucks floating away and the Fiesta Bowl Committee lurching in the urinal.

I watched the game last night. Did anybody find out who that was? That was so freaking annoying.

What was up with us running three straight run plays and not going for the endzone? DJ ended up missing the field goal. That game was horrendous last night. We gave them 14 garbage points on a kickoff and Quinn's interception. Then we miss 1 PAT and 2 FGs. We should have beat them 45-17 at least, but I guess I'll take the win. They made me sweat this one out though.

Did anyone notice that Jackson said "for the win" when Stanford lined up to kick the XP and lead 31-30? Talk about a Freudian slip. Very professional. How about 38-31 for the win, you old d*ckwad...

My Nuggetts:

1. This game exposed the secondary yet again. Leo Ferrine looked absolutely HORRIBLE on that bomb play that set up Stanford's go ahead TD. And I am sick and tired of watching Zbikowski chase Mike Richardson while Richardson is chasing a receiver into the end zone. Someone should give Rick Minter Lovie Smith or Tony Dungy's phone numbers. COVER 2, RICK!! Look into it. Your corners need help because they're not that good. Take the 4-5-2 defense and shove it.

2. Three man rush at the end of the game....and they still got to the guy. Now think of what a four man rush looks like. More bad defensive decision making.

3. Special teams still stink, Charlie. Fitzpatrick is a shaky kicker when he isn't hurt. Now he IS hurt and he's even worse.

4. Play calling on last drive = New England Patriots of yesteryear. Charlie gets his ass saved by Brady Quinn. Kevin White guzzles bottle of Pepto.

5. They have one route for Stovall: run down field and catch this pop up. Is there anything else they can run for this guy?

6. Screen pass to Walker for first down was an awesome play.

7. Overall, there was more in the bad column than the good column and they still won. Now comes the hard part. Bowl game and Year Two of the Weis Era. Expectations are high. I can't wait to see what happens.

COVER 2!!! Halas Hall - 847-295-6600. Ask for Lovie Smith or Ron Rivera. Best defense in the NFL can't be wrong, Rick.

9-2. Who'd have thunk it?
