Army to renew rivalry with Notre Dame
The Associated Press
November 21, 2005, 9:28 PM CST

Army and Notre Dame will renew their football series next season.

The teams will meet for the first time since 1998 and for the 49th time overall at Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 18, 2006.

"We are extremely excited," Army athletic director Kevin Anderson said. "We couldn't be more pleased to have the chance to match two of the sport's most historic programs on the football field once again."

No additional games between the schools have been agreed upon, but Anderson said discussions regarding future matchups would continue.

Notre Dame leads the all-time series 36-8-4. The teams met twice during the 1990s, and the Fighting Irish won both by a combined four points -- 28-27 in 1995 and 20-17 in 1998.

I was at the 1995 game at Giants Stadium in the pouring rain. If I remember correctly, ND had a 3-TD lead in the third quarter and Army came back to within one point of the Irish with less than :10 to go. They then went for 2 and the Irish stopped the Black Knights on the 1 yard line to preserve the win.

Wasn't it Ivory Covington that made that stop? All 170 pounds of him?

BINGO!!! Made a GREAT TEXTBOOK tackle on the 1/2 yard line to preserve the win.

Army could have tied the game with a XP kick but chose to go for two and the win from the 2 yd line. Army had rushed for over 350 yds that day but chose a pass to the big TE Leshinski. The much maligned Covington giving up 80 pounds stopped Leshinski cold with a 8 million dollar tackle.

I'm sure ND will take $hit from all of the haters for playing all three service academies.

Until Notre Dame schedules a MAC or 1-AA, I'm content.

BC and SC back to back in 2007.

That's too much hate for me in a fortnight.

Look at it this way. You can hone your hate for a week before BC then revel in glory for a full week after BC gets wacked. That gives you time to mellow down to recharge your full capacity of Southern Cal hatred. Think of it as Mendoza mental conditioning.

I hope so. They MUST beat BC in 07 and 08.

2007 will be a tough year. Quinn, Samardzija, Harris and Abiamari will all be gone. Others in that class aren't guaranteed fifth years.

Year Three of the Weis Era will see a lot of guys in this new class on the field.

If they can go, absolutely not.

But there is a lot to be said for in game experience.

After Quinn leaves, whoever Charlie gives the keys to will be unproven and inexperienced.

But there is no better master to learn under than Prince Charles.

Didn't I read somewhere that we are looking to schedule another home game vs. BYU next year, giving us 13 games (8 home, 5 road)?
