The fifteen semifinalists, in alphabetical order, are:
Brett Basanez, Northwestern
Brian Brohm, Louisville
Brodie Croyle, Alabama
Jay Cutler, Vanderbilt
Cody Hodges, Texas Tech
Omar Jacobs, Bowling Green
Matt Leinart, USC
Drew Olson, UCLA
Paul Pinegar, Fresno State
Brady Quinn, Notre Dame
Michael Robinson, Penn State
Brad Smith, Missouri
Drew Stanton, Michigan State
Marcus Vick, Virginia Tech
Vince Young, Texas

They only pick three finalists. Lienart is definitely in, that leaves two spots. That leaves Brohm, Jacobs, Pinegar, Quinn, and Young for those two. Olson and Vick took themselves out of the running last Saturday. Robinson, Smith et al just aren't in the same class.

Simple
Leinart and Young are already inked in. Quinn will be too unless he slips in the remaining games. If that happens Basanez will be #3.

Quinn is O'Brien Award finalist
The Associated Press
November 22, 2005, 4:19 PM CST

Notre Dame's Brady Quinn, Southern California's Matt Leinart and Texas' Vince Young are the three finalists for the Davey O'Brien Award, given to the nation's best quarterback.

Leinart, the 2004 Heisman Trophy winner, has thrown for 3,217 and 24 touchdowns for top-ranked USC. The senior is fourth in the country in passing efficiency (161.9).

Young, a junior, is sixth in the nation in total offense at 318 yards per game and second in passing efficiency with a 169.8 rating.

Quinn, a junior, is having a breakout season under new head coach Charlie Weis. He has thrown for 3,201 yards with a school-record 29 touchdown passes.

The O'Brien Award will be handed out Dec. 8 in Orlando, Fla., during ESPN's College Football Awards show.

Oklahoma's Jason White won the award the past two years.

TV ratings up:

Notre Dame football on NBC earned a 3.6 average rating this season, the highest in more than a decade and a 44 percent increase over last year.

The sixth-ranked Fighting Irish are 8-2 in their first season under coach Charlie Weis. With a win over Stanford on Saturday, Notre Dame will become eligible for the Bowl Championship Series.

Last season, Notre Dame games on NBC averaged a 2.5 rating.

This year's average rating was the highest since 1995, when it was 4.5.

The rating is the percentage of all homes with TVs, whether or not they are in use

Not sure if you all saw this but Jeff Samardzija is finalist for Bilitnekof Award. Speaking of if at the bigging of the season who'd a thunk it and straight jackets. What is so cool is both BQ and Shark are Juniors.

It's a shame Rhema McKnight getting hurt probably caused this, directly or indirectly. But having both at full strength next year will be nice. If Rhema gets the fifth year.

I think Young will win most QB awards. Quinn's chances will be hurt by having two losses.

Is it me, or does the Big 12 not look very impressive? I see Texas and 11 ordinary squads. OU being down hurt this group.

Rhema's "catches" have been split pretty much between Samardzija and Stovall. They're both putting up good numbers but both getting more chances than they would have.

Big 12 looks like the old Big 8, one dominant team, one pretender, and the rest, back in the pack. Nebraska wouldn't be bowl eligible except for a win over 1AA Maine.

The guy on here that I had a chance to see recently and LOVE as an NFL QB....Jay Cutler for Vanderbilt.

This guy will be drafted ahead of Leinert once the combines are over. Mark it down. You Indiana folks may know a bit about him...he's from Santa Claus, Indiana? Smart, good citizen, good size and a great arm. Surround him with the SC talent....hoorah.

How Basanez got first team All Big Ten over Robinson is beyond me.

Young needs another year to refine is passing skills. He, Quinn and Omar Jacobs will be a stellar trio of senior QB next year.

Marcus Vick has been overhyped and proved it against Miami.

Ummm.... no.

Reggie Bush ahead of Leinart? Sure. A QB from a school thats not even bowl eligible over a Heisman winner, and in the running for a second Heisman pro-style QB from a pro-style offense from a potential three time national champion? Not so much.

Ask an NFL GM if bowl eligibility matters to them.

I suggest watching the two players on tape and judge for yourself. I have. And what I've seen translates to one guy being a better NFL QB than the other. Ty Detmer, Eric Crouch and Andre Ware all won Heismans. Their NFL careers weren't very good, so Leinert's Heisman won't do him much good when he's under a pile of Baltimore Ravens.

Cutler has an NFL future and will be drafted in the first round. I take nothing away from his accomplishments in his four years, but Matt Leinert is an upgraded version of Ken Dorsey with an extra national title by NFL standards. He is not Carson Palmer. His lollipop tosses downfield to Dwayne Jarrett against putrid Pac 10 corners won't cut it in the NFL. Leinert will be drafted in the first round I imagine, but the upside of Cutler, Quinn and Omar Jacobs in the League are a lot better than Leinert's to a lot of people. If Jacobs and Quinn were to come out early, Leinert might be waiting to hear his name called for a while.

Cliff Claven will tell you it is a little known fact that Leinert stayed at SC not only for ballroom dance class but also because those within the NFL loop informed him if he came out he'd have been drafted behind Alex Smith and Aaron Rodgers. That would have meant second round max based on where Rodgers went.

Leinert had better hope that Steve Smith, Bush and Lendale White all get drafted to the same team he's on. He'll miss his fun in the sun days of college.

I agree...With the talent at all the skill positions on offense, even I could be vying for my second heisman trophy...being out here on the west coast, i have had plenty of chances to see SC.. the whole basis of there offense is 5 yard screens and slants to there skill players...it has obviously given them success, but by no means does that validate ML as a successful NFL prospect.

Speaking of staying in the NFL because he's not ready... Vince Young. He is in no way, shape or form an NFL QB. I don't know everything about the QB position but I know bad mechanics when I see them. That slow sidearm delivery of his will either A. get him sacked or B. get knocked down at the line. Hideo Nomo has a quicker release.

He better practice getting open from the slot because if he wants to make NFL dough he's going to have to make it at WR. I suggest he give Matt Jones a call.

There's no doubt, Guff. Great to see Nayers back again, too.

Young just became more of a throwing threat this year. NC or no NC, he should return for his senior season. His passing game needs to be improved even more if he wants to make a run at The League.

And your Matt Jones idea isn't a bad one. V Young is a big dude and has shifty, open field speed. If Arnaz Battle has a place in the NFL, Vince Young can find one.
