I-AA Playoffs

What a concept!! 16 teams, 8 automatic and 8 at large. Settled on the field. No 6-5 mediocre teams playing in stupid bowl games.

I love this. I had the chance to play in two playoff games, both on the road. I had a friend play for a team that went to the semifinals into mid December. Final exams weren't an issue for them, which is an often used (and very funny) excuse by the I-A brass not to have this format.

I'm sure that final exams are the reason why this just wouldn't work. Nothing to do with money.

Colgate (8-3) at (1) New Hampshire (10-1), 12 p.m.

Nicholls State (6-3) at Furman (9-2), 12:30 p.m.

Southern Illinois (8-3) at Eastern Illinois (9-2), 2 p.m.

Cal Poly (8-3) at Montana (8-3), 2:05 p.m.

Georgia Southern (8-3) at (4) Texas State (9-2), 3:30 p.m.

Richmond (8-3) at (3) Hampton (11-0), 8 p.m.

Eastern Washington (7-4) at Northern Iowa (8-3), 8:05 p.m.

Lafayette (8-3) at (2) Appalachian State (8-3), TBA

Oh the flipside, could the NCAA be using DI-AA as a guinea pig of sorts to see how a tourney would work?

The top four teams get seeded. I-A could seed all sixteen. Conference winners get automatic bids, then there is a left over number of at larges.

They'll never do it because it brings more parity and balance to college football. The Utah and Fresno State types could sneak up and make some noise.

Of course. They have a month long 65-team tourney for men's basketball. That's no excuse. Final exams usually end the 2nd week of December. The playoffs could start then.

Hands down, there is no more exciting spectacle in sports than March Madness. The popularity and hype over filling out brackets has become as American as the Super Bowl.

People love to see the Cinderellas like Valpo and Gonzaga play David to Goliath. CBS spent a TON of money to get the rights to the Big Dance, so there is money in a I-A football tournament.

6-5 and 7-4 seasons deserve no reward. Those bowl games are pointless and the schools barely break even when playing in them.

I love the DIV 1AA playoffs. You get a chance to see some pretty good football with teams that are never on TV. When most of the DIV 1 guys are through you can grab a beer and watch the AA teams without rooting for anybody. Super way to have a champion!

I find the excuse of exams to be insulting. Who are they trying to kid?

The difference between I-A and I-AA is a big one, no doubt. The talent is superior in I-A. But to suggest that they can't have a playoff for ACADEMIC reasons is an absolute laugh.

We have only ourselves to blame for the BCS and a lack of a playoff. The only way to end the BCS and get a playoff is to stop paying attention to the games. That's it. As long as they are making money the system will continue as is.

The bowl games are meaningless. Absolutely meaningless, even the one ND will go to. The games have no more impact on the outcome of the season than spring training split squad game has on the World Series. Even the BCS title game is a farce. I'm not sure Texas and USC are the two best teams in the country. As much as I hate Penn State I think they'd give USC all that they could handle. But we'll never know because the cartel formed by the Conference Commissioners and University President's gets too much money out of the current system. They also control the system. After the money, that's is the most important aspect of the system.

A playoff doesn't allow control of the final games. The current format all but ensures at least one big time match up. There is little chance of a lousy championship game match up. An eight or sixteen team playoff would leave open the possibility of a not made for TV match up - USC v. TCU, or Va Tech v. W. Virginia. The BCS allows for title game selected by a convoluted means and several other games hand picked to maximize attendance and TV audience. And we fall for it. Every single year we watch and attend meaningless football games in the middle winter. So long as we watch crap games, we will get crap games.

We should be debating playoff seeding. Instead we wait for USC and Texas to play out the string enroute get to the preordained title game and we wonder what meaningless game ND will play.

Did I mention that the bowl games are meaningless?

I usually watch the Rose Bowl and the title game. This year, two birds with one stone.

I had to watch Auburn last year to cheer them on, thus ensuring there would be two unbeaten teams in the same year.

One of these years, it won't fall into place and there will be four at the end of the regular season. Ah, to see the suits scramble.
