Parris Hitting Rehab Hard
by JASON SAPP
Nearly a month ago, a dislocated hip sidelined future Irish wide receiver Robby Parris for the remainder of his senior season. Ironically, another future ND prospect and teammate John Ryan suffered an injury to join Parris on the sidelines. But the Irish-bound duo are making strides towards a return to the field.
Parris had been posting star-like numbers for St. Ignatius before the hip injury. With all the high-light plays by No. 11, there is one that sticks out in Parris’ mind – the injury play.
"I was going out for a deep ball and got hit by one player high and the other player low," Parris explained. "My body got all twisted around and it popped right out. An hour later they went ahead and were able to pop it back in."
When players dislocate joints in their bodies, at times they are capable of returning after a few weeks of rehabilitation. The same applies for this uncommon injury because of one reason.
"I've been getting therapy at the Cleveland Clinic," Parris said. "It is one of the best rehab places in the country. I didn't need any surgery and I am already running. It's still a little early to tell if I can play, but I've been healing unbelievably fast and am about a month ahead of schedule. If things keep going the way they are, I can probably play in the playoffs, but the decision is in the doctor's hands."
Parris and Ryan are two of the many players on the Ignatius roster waiting to see if they will make the playoffs or not. Unfortunately, neither the healthy nor injured players could make a difference on the field.
"This weekend is a bye weekend so we have to wait and see if we'll make the playoffs," Parris reported Friday night. "We need some teams to win and others to lose in order to make it."
Being on the sidelines watching their teammates has been an extremely hard experience for Parris and Ryan. If Parris does get an opportunity to play, being that his team advances, he may not be alone.
"If everything goes well this weekend, then John will be able to play in the playoffs since he is recovering rather quickly too," Parris added.
If the St. Ignatius season continues, they will be without some impressive numbers from the first six games of the season. Parris recorded 34 receptions for 670 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. With numbers like this, the Notre Dame coaching staff has to be licking their chops about this prospect.
"I've been told in context that I will be able to contribute next year if I'm ready," Parris said, looking to next fall with the Irish. "I don't know what my role will be yet, but I am going to go in and do whatever I can to get on the field."
Like many other top prospects, Parris likes what he sees from the Charlie Weis offense.
"The team is doing awesome," Parris exclaimed. “They are really fun to watch and I'm excited to get a chance to play with some of those guys over the next few years."
Parris and Ryan will be taking their official visits to Notre Dame in December – either Dec. 2 for the banquet weekend or Dec. 10 depending on their success in the playoffs. This prospect can't wait to return to the field, whether it’s with St. Ignatius or with Notre Dame.
