... it wouldn't have mattered if they fed me macaroni and cheese and had me walk 10 miles ...

Sounds like he's seen the cafeteria!

I think he enjoyed his visit.

Yeah but I just think it is kind of funny that he hasn't yet given a verbal, I mean the quote about Iowa says it all, I think we are not one of the Top couple with this kid right now, but who knows-this kid is harder to call then a Weis offense play.

And you KNOW that he hasn't?

Isn't he making a USA AA Game announcement?

Yeah, no doubt he'll make his decision based upon superior number of sunrise drinkers.

... I think we are not one of the Top couple with this kid right now ...

"11" out of 10 doesn't sound favorable, does it?

I can't wait to watch that game. And I think his visit to Iowa may be another Hawkeye loss, I like the Gophers in that game.

Yeah, but they'll talk about Chad Greenway (Overrated) and Drew Tate (see Greenway) until you hit the mute button and swallow your remote because you can't take it anymore.

Their day is done. They'll become middle of the pack in no time. Penn State is coming back, which is scary but what I expected.

Ohio State's defense slapped Iowa right in the face. Truly a joy to watch.

Yes Isotopes, I like the Minnesota ground game against Iowa's D.

Can someone help me out understanding this? If the Lord had given me the gifts one needs in order to be able to play football at ND, I would have jumped at the chance and said "yes" so fast. If one knows where he is going, why not step up to the plate and say "yes" when you mean "yes" or if the case is such, "no" if you mean "no"? What is the advantage of postponing a decision that has been made, if in fact it really has been made? ( For example, "silent verbal" or soft verbal)

Alaska, I think you are feeling some of the frustration I feel on this subject. I can understand a player not wanting to commit because he wants to see other schools and meet other recruits. This is understandable.

However I draw the line where a recruit has committed to another school and nonetheless is invited to ND for an official visit.

This was my point before the USC game when Jaques McClendon had committed to Tenn and yet was coming to ND on an "official". That should not be allowed. Using your description, he had said "yes" to Tenn and "no" to ND.

I have not seen wether he attended the game but I sure hope not

Carufel will play in the US Army AA Bowl. Players get to announce their selection to a national audience. The sponsors like it, the players like it, and high schools and colleges like the publicity.

Do you remember 3 years ago when Chris Leak announced at the USA AA Bowl Game that he was committing to Florida, and, on national TV invited the other talented players to join him in building a national contender? It had positive impact on UF's recruiting.

Most people don't marry the first person they date. Sales people are taught on average that you get 7 "NOs" before you get a "YES". Prospects are mostly 17 and 18 years old, they change their minds.

CW's selling and he's giving kids more than one opportunity to look his product over. It's his budget and his call.

And hope that sales people that stop pitching don't come to work for you.

Can't buy this logic BGIF. According to you Weis should bring in a lot a recruits who have committed elsewhere to give them a chance to change their minds. Very expensive sales program not to mention they would be taking the place of someone who has a legitimate interest in ND.

And buy the way I agree good salesmen do not take a NO and move on . But I would not like to be paying a salesman who spends his time returning to all the NO customers. There are new ones to pursue.

i think this was exactly the problem with Irish coaches in recent memory. a player says he isn't interested, and we move on. look at where that's gotten us.

I wouldn't buy that logic either don, if that was what was said but that's not what I said. We were discussing one kid, a prospect. Remember you wrote,
... I draw the line where a recruit has committed to another school and nonetheless is invited to ND for an official visit."

I responded,
CW's selling and he's giving kids more than one opportunity to look his product over. It's his budget and his call.

Now I did make kid "plural" by adding the "s" but nowhere was there mention nor inference to "a lot a recruits".

While a salesperson keeps pitching, the successful ones know to qualify and requalify the prospect (or prospects) throughtout the sales cycle. The constant update and re-evaluation tells you whether to continue with one prospect or move on to another.

CW and staff culled through thousands of prospects and reduced to the list to a few hundred. Junior Day, May evaluations, film, camp, game reviews, personal contact, and academic screening reduced it further. The NCAA says a school can have 50 some recruits make Official Visits. ND will probably use less than 60% of those available. I think ND's budget can handle that and believe CW and staff are only asked those they've qualified by athletic skill, academic ability, and character to come on down and take the keys for a test drive. But that still doesn't guarantee a scholarship, many are called, few are chosen, and some say no, thank you.

In a previous post I referred to marriage, "not everyone marries the first person they date". Good thing since 1/2 of marriages end up in divorce. Well and ND scholarship is like a marriage, Holtz's "40 year decision". Recruiting is viewed by many as a sales process, it some respects it is. But it's more a courtship, both sides are selling, both sides are buying. Considering ND's academic challenge, du lac, and level of play a recruit has to be comfortable they can make it at ND on and off the field. And the Administration and coaching staff want a similar level of confidence that the student athlete can handle that challenge. That pool of recruits isn't very big. But since it's been qualified and requalified continuously, CW isn't wasting money, time, nor "somebody else's space" by honing in on the selected few.
