Just to quell any fears out there, this except from a SoBe Trib article, should make you think twice about reaching for the Mallox....

"If Notre Dame were to beat USC, would it feed speculation that Irish coach Charlie Weis will start entertaining job offers from the NFL?"

Geez, didn't we already go through this with Tyrone Willingham in 2002?

Sure, it will feed speculation, but not for anyone who's been paying attention. Weis never has and never will consider the Notre Dame head coaching job as a stepping stone. There were only two college jobs he would have ever considered coming out of the NFL, and those were ND and South Carolina.
Family considerations come into play, too. Weis considers South Bend a great fit for wife Maura, son Charlie Jr., and especially daughter Hannah. And Hannah's welfare takes precedence over any job. Weis has never been or never will be about the money.
Could Weis change his mind several years down the road? Perhaps. Changes at the presidential and athletic director level can do that sometimes. Just ask Lou Holtz, but right now the NFL isn't anywhere on his radar.

My biggest concern is his health.

Then down the road (5 years and 2 NC's) the NY Giants. Let's hope Coughlin and Eli really are successful together.

Yeah Im a Jets fan but I'll root for both. I just hope Eli doesnt win a SB because then all the Giants fans would be all over me.

A little off-topic here but why is there a big black guy when we report posts. If John Saunders or Mike Wilbon saw it they would think it was rascist. (sarcasm)

Weis is a man of his word. Did any of you watch his press conference when he was introduced as our new head coach? He is retiring at ND....period!!! This crap about him leaving is really annoying.

THANK YOU! He said he'd stay 10yrs MAX, that is if the Administration wanted him.....Unfortunately, as long as he/ND is successful you're going to hear the rumors EVERY YEAR......SO, let's all relax and enjoy the ride. It should be something special...

You're right WeisfanMA, my biggest concern is health as well.

Funny how no one EVER hears rumors about LLLoyd Carr going to the pros or Phil Fulmer....

Giants and to some extent the Jets are the only two jobs that would intrigue him. People need to realize this isn't some guy coaching ND, he attended ND, and went to every home game, and road game, and also attented all the ND BBall games the year they made it to the final 4. This guy obvisiously loves ND, he's a fan just like all of us here on this great board.......

He has said it himself: he's only been a head coach for 5 games. He has a lot more to prove.

Not to worry. Charlie will be here for at least 10 years, or until his health gives out. I look at what happened to Leahy and Ara and after 10 years on this pressure cooker job, their health failed. And they seemed to be a lot healthier than Charlie going into the job. That should be our only concern!

Not very concerned, I'm sure he's taking care of himself, he's dropped 100pounds and has kept it off.

He could be coaching in NFL right now if he wanted to. If he didn't take the ND job he would be coaching in the NFL. He wanted to coach here.

In the end you can be compared to Rockne and Bryant or Lombardi and Shula. Either way you are among greatness.

That's what I wanna hear:) lol. I guess I'm pretty lucky. The Giants are one of only 3 teams I could ever see him leaving ND for (along w/ the Jets and Pats) and they're the only one I could live w/ considering I'm a fan.

I would rather see him stay in South Bend though. ND comes first. Maybe he can spawn a couple great coordinators and one of them can fall off the coaching tree and become the next great Giant coach from the Parcels tree, since (unfortunately) I don't think its Coughlin in the long run...

Who the hell would want to deal with all of those millionaires like Terrell Owens and Keyshawn Johnson?

There have been more penalties this year in the NFL than in any other year to this point. The games are extremely boring from an offensive standpoint. The technique and fundamentals of a large majority of the players are awful. 30 teams and they want to add more? Please.

Plus, when you live in Chicago and are a Bears fan, watching the NFL is God's way of making you pay for your sins. I go to Mass on Sunday instead and watch tape of college games.

That said, Weis should just keep hauling in top ten recruiting classes each year and enjoy the quality control he has over young adults.

Imagine some idiot telling Weis "I play when I want to play"

yeah, i think that's all in large part due to the salary cap. talent is diffused in the name of parity, but the negative by-product is there aren't any truely great teams anymore, or at least there are very few of them and usually they can't keep it together for long. I think the Pats are kinda the exception that proves the rule in this case.

W/ college football though, its different. Weis must love the fact that he can actually control his team's talent level, and not have to worry about salary caps and bonuses and incentives. Just recruit better than everyone else, and you'll have a better team talent-wise than everyone else. I think that's why all these former NFL guys recruit so hard (Weis, Ferentz, and yes Carroll) they're all just so elated that they can actually control their talent level and have better players on the field at every position if they just try hard enough, a luxury completely with-held from them in the pros.

Sounds like you are just a ticked off Bears fan and they are the only team you watch. Do not let them keep you from enjoying the NFL. I really do not have a favorite NFL team so I enjoy watching the good teams play. However, nothing compares to ND!!!

You're right about the first part.

I enjoy the playoffs. Other than that, there isn't a personality in The League that I really care for. Used to be a big fan. Then the Terrell Owens, Ray Lewis, Randy Moss and Keyshawn Johnson types began ruining it for me.

Tom Brady, despite his alma mater, is alright. Peyton Manning is a good guy. Other than that, this is my little brother's NFL. Selfish, complaining, weed smoking menaces to society.

Give me Joe Montana, Emmit Smith and Jerry Rice any day of the week.

He better keep winning- I bet people thought the same thing when Ty started out HOT- before losing one game.....and then of course the bowl game to NC State...Wasn't that a record for a first year ND coach??

NOT SO FAST MY "FRIEND"......yes, "He that shall remain nameless" started out fast, but it was with smoke and mirrors, solid D, a few timely turnovers and some luck. All of which came crashing down against Bahstahd College.

He that shall remain nameless NEVER ADJUSTED his gameplans after that game and it was reflected in his mediocre record afterward.....

FINALLY, CW is the OPPOSITE end of the spectrum. He's quick to adapt, makes adjustments, TEACHES & COACHES (instead of molds..) and most importantly has instilled an attitude of winning, which when combined with the players execution and coaches' adroit play calling = WINS.

TIMES ARE DEFINITELY DIFFERENT in SoBe my friend and ANYONE who even has the temerity to compare CDub's start to "H.T.S.R.N"'s start, either doesn't know sports or hasn't watched the first five games of this year and the games of 2002.

I agree with Domer.

Weis has a plan. He is a hands on teacher and coach. He is organized. His staff is top notch. They're VIKING YEOMEN when it comes to recruiting.

Right size, but wrong shape on the 2002 to 2005 argument. I think we're dealing with a different beast.

"He better keep winning ...". CW addressed when he accepted the job.

Can you grasp 500 yds/game offense versus "smoke and mirrors"?

Psst, CW's already lost one game and neither he, the players, nor the fans have folded.
