He's been to Pitt, UM and Florida on visits. He's seen ND several times unofficially. Why would he come for the SC game if he goes somewhere else? Boys, I'm starting to think we have him. This kid could start at corner for ND THIS year. Keep your fingers crossed on this one!!

Five-star cornerback Darrin Walls out of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Woodland Hills is looking at setting up a press conference to announce his college decision before his October 14th visit to Notre Dame. Does this mean the Irish are out of it for the 6-foot-0, 172-pounder with 4.4-second speed?

Walls is planning on making his decision on October 3rd.

"I haven't set up an official press conference yet, but I'm looking at probably doing it on October 3rd," he said. "I still plan to take the official to Notre Dame on October 14th, but I want to decide before I go on the visit. I know Notre Dame will still let me come on my visit even if I don't decide to go to their school, but I just want to decide beforehand.

"I am down to Pittsburgh, Michigan, Florida and Notre Dame as the teams I'm looking at. I think I can judge Notre Dame without the official visit as I've been there three or four times unofficially."

The No. 24 player in the country went on to talk about each of his favorites.

"First off, I like the coaching staffs at all the schools and I have a really close relationship with all of them," he said. "I like the weather at Florida and the opportunity to play early. I like coach English at Michigan because he's known for putting defensive backs in the NFL. I also like the way they play defense with a lot of man and blitzing. I like the graduation rate at Notre Dame and the opportunity to play early and the coaches a lot too. Finally, Pittsburgh's coaching staff is great. I've known coach Junko and Rhoads for a long time and I know that a corner is graduating after this year so the opportunity to play there is great."

This weekend Walls may take an unofficial visit to West Virginia before making his decision.

"I just want to see the academic part of the school and sort of get the experience from there."

hmmm him saying that he still wants to attend the ND-USC game even after the decision makes it seem like he's ours

or maybe thats just wishful thinking?

Either way I don't think this hints anything, I mean what highschool kid would pass up the chance to watch Leinhart and Bush or the ND-USC rivalry?

I don't like how he said Notre Dame will still let him vist even if he doesn't choose Notre Dame. Does this sound bad to anyone else??

Let him think that all he wants. If he doesn't choose ND, don't be surprised if his visit isn't on the house and given to another secondary member.

Exactly. He can't decide to go to Florida, Pitt or UM and still come to see ND. That vist spot could be used for someone who hasn't verballed yet and wants to go to ND. It would really be a waste of time.

ND's chances sound very good. I think he'll verbal and enroll in January with Aldridge. Walls has to know that he'll be starting at some point in 2006 if he comes to ND, possibly in the opener.

He also plays WR and Weis has hinted he could play both ways and special teams.

This kid would be the gem of the class if they land him.

Just remember, many kids change their original 'commit' when it is signing day. Based on that fact, I have no problem w inviting a kid to ND for the weekend that has given a verbal elsewhere.

I don't like how Florida has shown up in his top schools. It was ND, MICH, PITT. I have this feeling that if he was choosing ND, he would wait until Oct 15th. It seems to me that Pope Urban is trying to get the kid to commit before he goes to an unbelievable game like ND/SC.

Again, good points. Nothing matters until signing day.

Florida has been there for a while. Rumor has it (my uncle coaches in Pittsburgh) that Florida is too far for Walls. Blue and Gold also said that based on what Walls told the Pitt staff, he won't go down there because of that. He wants to go somewhere close to home, but he wants to play too. Pitt, UM and ND stand the best chance.

I like ND's chances here. The "total package" is there in this situation.

I can't believe Walls is serious about taking an official visit to ND after he has verbally committed to another school. Keep in mind that He has been to the ND campus at least three times so he knows what it looks like. Weis is too smart to let him come if he has chosen someone else. What would he do on such a visit? Tell the other recruits why he isn't coming to ND? Or perhaps why they should be going to Mich,Fla. or Pitt? Sorry Darrin--No dice.

Weis is pretty intense, I'd be scared if I committed somewhere else, and still decided to go to the ND-USC game. I wouldn't want to have to face Weis..........

Keep the faith. I think he'll be on campus come January. Can't wait to see him in the Blue and Gold game.

I feel strong about this one. I think he's going to choose ND.

He saw them beat Pitt and UM. Gotta love that.

Agreed. While recruits will often continue to take official visits (either to keep their options open or to "enjoy" the recruiting process and take time off from class), I find it unlikely that he will snub ND and then go on an official visit (his fourth time on campus) less than two weeks later. I think his comments reflect an attempt to avoid making his decision a foregone conclusion prior to his formal announcement.

I have a feeling that it is either going to be us or Florida since he was at the Gator and Vols game two weeks ago. Mike from rivals said on the Coaches Spotlight last week that all the recruits enjoyed themselves. At this point I would be discouraged about Michigan lackluster start...LOL and Pitts start. MSU is going to roll over Michigan this weekend.

These are teenage boys we're dealing with here. The ego involved in having a press conference is one I can't imagine. They enjoy the spotlight when 2/3 of these guys know where they want to go from the get-go.

Walls has to know that he will be a star at ND immediately and on TV every week for his family to see him. And he's about 99% sure of graduating.

you're not going to get that anywhere else.

I totally hear ya, Jigg, however, I'm just a jaded/cynical New Yawker, esp. since we've been burned in the past (see Reggie Bush and Lorenzo Booker)...imagine if Weis was coach and recruiting THEM....

I think (and pray) he's a done deal for us, but I didn't like his near giddy report of the trip to UF........UNLESS it was to throw people off the trail (a la Zibby and his diary....)

If he has half the brain he's reported to have and actually cares about academics (M. Rolle are you reading this????), he'll announce ND on ten-three. Unless he wanted to major in marine biology...

Domer, I'm a cynical Chicago Italian. You're preaching to the choir, Boss!!

If ND had Bush and Booker, ND would also still have Ty. Not even that staff could screw THAT up.

All I know is that if I was a recruit or the parent of a recruit, I would take one look at coach carr's behavior on the side line, and at handshake time after a loss. He is a smug, sore loser, who belittles players for making errors. His lack of class alone would make the decision alot easier for me.

Biggest crybaby of all time. How many phantom fumbles and touchdowns did they have in the 2000 season? (ND and Illinois were victims)

Screw Lloyd Carr. How they are still able to recruit is beyond me.

His job has Bobby Petrino's name written all over it.
