Really Cool article in the WSJ outlining the success NFL Head Coaches, Off. & Def. Coordinators have had as they move into the college game.

Year Before 77-100 .435%
Year 1 87-114 .433%
Year 2 70-88 .443%
Year 3 78-47 .624%
Year 4 40-10 .800%

My guess is that C-Dub really improves upon those numbers.

WSJ always has fact based journalism unlike crap like Art Thiel wrote in Seatlle Post (see other post)

Thanks WFan. The true test that I'm looking for is hoisting an NC trophy in 2007, as that will be CDub's 3rd year and as the record books show, ALL GREAT ND coaches have won NC's in their 3rd year....although I wouldnt' mind getting one next year too!

Weisfan,

Can you supply some more info on the statistics such as how many coaches in the sample? I tried estimating the number of coaches but the yearly games vary dramatically.

Year Before 77-100 .435% - Total Games 177
Year 1 87-114 .433% - Total Games 201
Year 2 70-88 .443% - Total Games 158
Year 3 78-47 .624% - Total Games 125
Year 4 40-10 .800% - Total Games 50

I assumed "Year Before" represents the previous coach and year 4 with only 50 games was 2005. Allowing that some new coaches may have taken their team to a bowl game or there could have been an added 12th game or 13th game championship doesn't account for the jump of 24 games, nor the drop of 43 games the next yearnor the continued drop in games the next year.

I'm not a statistician I follow the trend of increasing % wins each year but shouldn't the number of games per year be close to constant?

Using year 4 as 2005 and allowing for 3 games so far this season works out to about 17 coaches. That makes "Year Before" 10 game season with a couple of bowls perhaps. Year 1 could be a 12 game year per NCAA. Year 2 and 3 don't correlate unless the number of coaches vary.

Year Before Games 177/17 coaches = 10.4 games
Year 1 Total Games 201/17 = 11.8 games
Year 2 Total Games 158/17 = 9.3 games
Year 3 Total Games 125/17 = 7.4 games
Year 4 Total Games 50/17 = 3 games

BGIF, wish I had all the answers to your questions which are good one. Year Before is the year before the coach was hired......i think your assumptions about Year 4 being 2005 are correct. I will try to find the weblink for this online article -- the article has a great caricature of C-Dub as the Leprechaun.
