No list of South Bend restaurants is complete without Rocco's Pizza (south of campus on 23). It's been owned by the same people forever and its a favorite among past and current coaches and players.

Awesome thread.

I need to ask about a couple of old places which I think are no longer around.

1. Fat Shirley's?
2. The Commons (It was across from Bridgett's, however, I think both were gone before any of you were at ND - use to be a hotdog stand behind Bridgett's where you could get the Cadillac - a dog with everything, I mean everything, on it - of course, I never ate one sober)?
3. Is Club Lasalle same as Lasalle Grille - downtown SB?
4. Ramona's Car Wash?
5. Crimaldi's - cool little local Italian place in Elkhart?

1.) Fat Shirley's is the Whitehouse Cafe. It will always be around.
2.) Never heard of it. Bridgett's is Molly's Coffee House.
3.) Club LaSalle is the bar above LaSalle Grille.
4.) Never heard of it.
5.) Never heard of it.

Someone here better say Barnaby's. Best food in South Bend and best atmosphere after the games.

Thanks Rip. Did you frequent Shirley's (late night, of course)?

South Bend has to be one of the best cities to get good food for cheap. I'm glad to see that Fat Shirley's is still around.

The Commons was around when I was a Domer but was demolished in the mid-1990s after a student was shot in the parking lot. I loved the bar's free popcorn and celebrated my 21st birthday there.

I don't know if Ramona's Car Wash is still around, but it was a fun place to go when ND women got you down.

But for my game weekends, we usually stop at Rocco's in SB Fri. night and Macri's in Mishawaka after the game on Saturday, but the original Bruno's on Prarie Ave. (?) and Barnaby's are reliable backups. For fine dining, Tippecanoe Place in the historic West Washington district is as close as you'll come to "fine dining" in South Bend.

Speaking of Rocco's, I can't believe that Rocco and his wife are still alive and working at the restaurant, even though they turned it over to their children. The two of them look fabulous, and they must be in their mid-80s when I saw them at MSU weekend.

Restaurants???? Hell I never make it out of Gipper's Bar. When I travel 6 hours from Oil Shitty PA, I have a mission... DRINK MY FACE OFF and WATCH ND STOMP ASS!!!! Gippers makes a tremendous Captain Morgan and Coke and a succulant Coors draft beer. I don't remember eating???? Domino's prepares a delicious pie with your choice of toppings (12 or so to choose from) and get this, they bring dinner to your room!!!! If I'm dreaming, please don't wake me!!
