Army will be good to have back on the schedule.

Duke is very interesting. Not sure what either one of these games will do for recruiting, if anything.

Penn State will be a big draw again. That is going to be something. Problem is, Joe Pa probably won't be coach any longer. Those Holtz-Paterno battles were great games. 1992 on Senior Day in the snow...forever a classic.

So much of Paterno's remaining tenure will bank on this season. Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Iowa all look to be top notch in the Big Ten. Penn State has to be in that bottom half. They are clearly not what they once were. Pennsylvania is such a hotbed for talent, so I'm not sure why PSU has fallen these past few years. The rest of the Big Ten has gotten better, but Penn State struggles outside of the conference as well.

I've heard Rick Neuheisal's name mentioned. I've also heard Bruce Haslett from the Saints. Just in the past few years.

i could see him retiring after this year if he has a decent season. it's pretty clear that he's not going to win the race with bowden. if he can put in a respectable season this year, he can bow out gracefully and be remembered as the legend that he is. and i think a lot of psu fans will breath a small sigh of relief that there will be some new life in the program.

My prediction is that this year is it for JoePa either way.
--If they have a good year, it's a chance to go out on a high note.
--If they suck again (the more likely alternative, I'd say), then, they've gotta cut him loose to stop the bleeding.

PSU will never fire Joe. He's done so much for that school. If Joe leaves it's on his own terms. I think he'll stick around a few more years.

In this day and age of college football, nothing seems to shock me anymore. That being said, ANYONE can be fired. Now Paterno is probably most likely to not get fired, but the PSU administration can certainly twist his arm to get out and retire/resign.

Pitt is up and coming. West Virginia is making strides, Vjirgina and Virginia Tech are doing well. The schools in the PSU region are all doing well and they are not. I'm not sure how they pulled in Derrick Williams and Justin King, but two recruits won't make it happen in the long run.

I think the time for a new, fresh face is near in Happy Valley. In fact, it is long overdue.

Indiana also was never going to fire Bob Knight, either. Sometimes a coach leaves the University few options, which I think JoePa is closely approaching.

When a coach starts to tarnish the school or cost them big time dollars, personal relationships are easily voidable. It's a business and I've heard countless alumni on sports radio call for his head. It is a matter of time IMO.

Hard to believe he's still 0.746 with PSU. I can't see somebody with that record being fired either. Besides, when I do come across a PSU fan, they usually spend more time talking about JoPa than they do the team. That's where the fanbase lies.

If he has a subpar .500 season he will be gone. I do not think people at State College will stand to have another losing season. The question in my mind is who is out there that can replace Paterno?

I dunno... like I said, I probably listen to 6-8 hours of sports radio daily and listen to both Fox and ESPN shows including Rome, Cowherd, Patrick, so on and so forth and whenever Penn State is brough up it is a good 70/30 in favor of forcing JoePa out.

I also vividly remember a call Cowherd had from a female alum from PSU who said a group of alumni threatened to quit donating to the program if changes were not made. That really made me open my eyes to how bad it has become.

While his career winning percentage cannot be denied, loyalty in college sports has really gone out of the window. It is definitely a "what have you done for me lately" outlook and if Penn State continues to lose recruits and money, the administration will not be able to sit idle.

Joe's the face of Penn State football. He's one of the main reasons PSU is the school it is today, millions upon millions of dollars have gone through that school because of him, he's had libaries built.

I do believe they want him gone, but I think he has to much pull, and just enough supporters. Hopefully he retires though, he's really damaging his legacy.

frankly, i think the university has shown a tremendous amount of loyalty to paterno so far, and it's admirable that they've continued to do so.

there's so much talk out there about loyalty, commitment, etc., but IMO, it's misplaced. paterno ought to know better - he's clinging to something he should be letting go of. he's a living legend, but he simply can't win games like he used to, and it's unfair (not to mention selfish) to continue to put the university in the unenviable position of having to decide when to cut the ties.

joe needs to recognize the fact that he can continue to maintain his ties to the university, a loyal fan base, and the respect of the masses even if he ISN'T head coach at penn state. then he needs to do the right thing and let an administration that's shown true loyalty to a failing coach to go out and find someone who can restore the program to where it should be.

Paterno has been coaching for so long, he has no idea what else to do with himself. He'll probably end up being one of those guys that passes away within a couple of months of retirement (Got Bear Bryant?).

I'm of the opinion that the time has come. The game has passed him by and it is clear when you watch the Penn State offense that is the case. His last chance was 1999 and Minnesota spoiled that one. In the end, is it better to burn out or fade away?
