Police said Thursday they believe a Troy, Mich., man reported missing this week was slain in his basement and that his body was disposed of by his killers, according to the Detroit News.

The eldest son, Patrick Mikes Jr., is a senior at the University of Notre Dame. Mikes Jr. has been released after being jailed in Michigan for credit card offenses involving the use of his teenage brother's credit card.

"We are treating this now as a homicide," Troy police Capt. Robert Redmond.

Mikes Jr. has been described as a "person of interest" in his father's disappearance and in what police suspect was a violent encounter of some type in the basement because of evidence recovered inside the residence, the newspaper reported.

Mikes Sr. is a 1979 Notre Dame graduate.

The Detroit News further reported:

Investigators said they became suspicious of some of the answers provided by the sons, who reported their father's disappearance 40 hours after they had last seen him riding away Friday on his bicycle. Redmond noted the senior Mikes' bicycle helmet and riding shoes were both in the home and Mikes never showed up for his job as an accountant on Friday.

"He would not have gone out riding without them," said Redmond, who said investigators are now "discounting" the story of a bike ride.

"We are trying to establish a timeline for Patrick Mikes Jr.'s whereabouts from Thursday night to Sunday morning," said Redmond, who said police have obtained a video of the son purchasing cleaning supplies Friday night.

Redmond stressed another son living in the home, Andrew Mikes, 16, is not a suspect in the disappearance.

No one has been charged with any offenses regarding Mikes' disappearance although Mikes Jr., a psychology and pre-med major at Notre Dame, was held in police custody for three days before he was charged with unauthorized use of a credit card.

Mikes Jr. posted bond Thursday evening and was released from Oakland County Jail. He had been held on $50,000 bond.

He allegedly used his brother's American Express card for a meal at Johnny Rocket's restaurant and to attend two films the day before his father's disappearance.

Police said Andrew Mikes is cooperating with investigators and they fear for his safety should his older brother be released from jail. His attorney, Christopher Andreoff, declined comment on his client or the case Thursday, the News reported.

Police spent more than 15 hours on Sunday removing evidence from the home, according to neighbors, who saw authorities leave the home with carpeting, boxes of material and one of the family's vehicles. Investigators are also hoping to locate Mikes' black and red Cannondale Super 6 road bicycle.

Anyone who may have seen the missing man or his oldest son between last Friday and Sunday is asked to call police at 248-524-3477.

Son faces murder charges in case of missing Troy man | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

Troy— The 21-year-old son of a missing Troy man is in police custody and expected to be charged today with open murder in his father's disappearance.

The news comes as police resume a search today in northern Genesee County, where they believe they may find the body of Patrick Mikes Sr., 55. The accountant has been missing for nearly three weeks.

His son, Patrick Mikes Jr., initially described as a person of interest in the disappearance, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Rochester Hills based on evidence, including DNA testing, police said. Police said Wednesday the evidence indicates Mikes Sr. died of blunt force injuries.

During a news conference Wednesday night at the Troy Police Department, police said a warrant request was based on an investigation that included recovery of "an incredible amount of evidence from the scene, consultation with representatives of the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office and a forensic analysis of a portion of the trace evidence by the forensic science division of the Michigan State Police."

Capt. Robert Redmond said evidence found in Mikes' home on Homewood, including blood-soiled carpeting, had been analyzed to determine what happened in the basement and whether it involved the missing man.

"The DNA blood analysis evidence puts Mr. Mikes Sr., the missing person, with his son Patrick kind of together," he said. He did not say if a weapon was involved, what it was or if it was recovered. There was no word on a motive.

Redmond said the son had injuries when he was taken in for questioning, but did not say what they were or how severe.

Investigators presented the warrant to 52-4 District Judge William Bolle on Wednesday, who approved the arrest warrant.

Mikes Jr., a senior at University of Notre Dame with a double major in psychology and pre-med, was taken into custody while dining in Rochester Hills, police said.

He is expected to be arraigned at 2:30 p.m. today at 52-4 District Court in Troy.

Meanwhile, Redmond said an extensive search for Mikes Sr. is planned today near Montrose Township, about 20 miles northwest of Flint, based on tips and leads in his disappearance.

Some 35 officers, 12 canine teams and several citizens from Troy that help the police will be there from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., searching the area for a body.

"Based on the evidence we have, based on the data we have, it's the most likely area and we have to start somewhere," Redmond said, adding nothing had been found there yet.

Police and cadaver dogs visited the Montrose area — including stretches along the Flint River, a landfill and farmland — for several hours last week.

Police knocked on doors in Montrose last week and circulated fliers with photos of Mikes' gray four-door Infiniti.

Mikes was reported missing nearly three weeks ago by his two sons.

His son was charged last week with crimes involving unauthorized use of his teenage brother's credit card.

He was jailed on $50,000 cash bond but was released when his maternal grandparents posted bond, police said. He was ordered not to return to the home, leave the state or contact his brother, Andrew, 16.

Redmond said investigators have called Mikes Jr. a person of interest in both the disappearance and a "violent encounter" in the basement of the home.

Mikes Jr. initially reported seeing his father leave their house on a bicycle ride at 5:30 p.m. July 27.

And while Mikes' black and red Cannondale racing bike is missing, riding equipment the avid cyclist always wore was found in the house, police said. Mikes Sr. didn't report to his accountant's job July 27 as scheduled.

Adding interest in Mikes Jr. is a video police obtained from a store where he bought cleaning supplies the night of July 27.

Andrew Mikes told investigators while he initially thought his father might have gone bike riding, he recalled seeing him July 26, not July 27, as his older brother reported.

The teenager is living with relatives at an undisclosed location, and Redmond stressed he is not a suspect in the case and has been cooperating.

Body found believed to be missing Troy man | The Detroit News | detroitnews.com

Troy— A body found Friday in Genesee County is believed to be that of Patrick Mikes, the Troy man whose son has been charged with killing him.

Troy Police Capt. Robert Redmond said at a news conference Friday that investigators found the body about 11 a.m., 15 feet inside the edge of a cornfield in Montrose Township, on Morrish Road north of Lake Road.

A bike matching the description of one belonging to Mikes, 55, an avid cyclist, was found about 15 feet from the body, Redmond said.

Members of the Mikes family have been notified, he said. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office is scheduled to positively identify the body and conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

"We began searching for Mr. Mikes when he was reported missing," Redmond said. "When we recently arrested and charge Patrick Mikes Jr. with murder, we did not give up the search for his father. We continued to search because it was the right thing to do."

Mikes Jr., 21, was charged Thursday in 52-4 District Court with open murder in his father's death.

Redmond declined to discuss a possible cause of death or the condition of the body found in northwest Genesee County. He reiterated that police believe an altercation between Mikes and his son occurred in the basement of the family's home, where the older man's blood was found.

Redmond said a team of investigators and volunteers searched for the body for 12 hours Thursday, and nearly found it just before the search was called off for the day at 7:30 p.m.

"A search team was within about 30 feet of the body, with a member of the press present, when the search was terminated," Redmond said.

The body needs to be positively identified by the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office, the captain said. He added that Mikes' family members were notified that remains had been found.

Redmond thanked residents of Montrose Township and nearby areas for aiding the search. "The citizens provided numerous tips to us that we followed up on that helped us in our efforts," he said.

Police earlier reported recovering Mikes' blood and DNA in the family's upscale home near Long Lake and Adams roads. Evidence was also recovered inside Mikes' Infiniti, which they believe was used to transport and dispose of his body. There is other forensic evidence linking his son to the killing, police said Wednesday.

Christopher Andreoff, Mikes Jr.'s attorney, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge. A preliminary exam conference is scheduled for Aug. 27.
