Interesting....Hildbold was a very good punter surprised he didn't have an NFL career.

Maybe the one year Willingham coached Hildbold, he was impressed with his knowledge of the game, and saw something in him. Either way good luck to him, ND does turn out some coaches, Weis, Clements, Haywood, etc

Come on, he's a graduate assistant for defense. I seriously doubt he will be formulating their nickle blitz packages as a first year grad student. Rather, he'll be doing stuff like yelling at guys while they high-step through tires and compiling tapes of the opponents' receivers. Did you think he'd find a job as a punting coach?

agreed...i wouldn't laugh too loudly here....all of us are placing a lot of faith in a coach who never played the college or pro ball....i'd have to say a punter can know the game as well as anyone else - they certainly get enough time on the sidelines to study it.

Since special teams is considered defense, don't you think he is simply getting his feet wet in anticipation of becoming a special teams coach in the future?

Man if we only win one game this year it better be against Washington.

Yeah, let's keep things in perspective folks.

It's a good move for Joey to get some experience as a graduate assistant without the pressure of having to be held accountable for wins/losses/defensive performance.

We should be happy for Hildbold, and also not be so quick to put down an idea just because it came from TyWillie. If C-Dub had brought Joey into the fold in the same capacity, we'd rightfully be praising him for giving the kid an opportunity. So to paraphrase a line from some movie I saw a while back (probably some Billy Crystal romance-comedy thing)..."Just because the idea is coming from Ty, it doesn't make it a bad idea."

dont get me wrong, im happy for hildbold and everything, but i personally think ty is sort of in the hot seat. with all the hoopla surrounding his firing, if he doesnt produce a good season, hes going to look like a bad coach. which might not be fair to him, but there are still good players at washington to have a decent season. i just figured he might want to try and bring in the best experienced coaches available, escpecially with all the changes in the program, to help ease things. that why i questioned his motives. and i am putting faith in weis, because he has won 3 superbowls and has won everywhere he has been.

There are strict rules regarding coaching staff too. Every team in the country has two graduate assistant coaches. I suspect a punter may even be a better candidate than a 'skill' player.

I'm speechless. This is all too bizarre for me.

Weis should bring back the Rocket. He's probably making bank on ESPN, though.
