Funny, I used to think people were still fighting the civil war here...until I moved here 18 years ago. I don't know anyone still fighting it. And I have known southerners to be every bit as hospitable as they are rumored to be.

Of course everyone has their rednecks morons that make a bad name for the rest of us, but to be honest I lived around Philly for 26 years and went to College in the Poconos near Berwick, PA, and that area of the world was far more ignorant and racist than any area of the south I have lived (thankfully).

most of what I was saying was tongue in cheek...I think I shoulda used Italics...

I grew up in PA...I know.

The thing about Southerners I know is they do a real good job of forcing polite to outweigh ill feelings...it is just part of the culture...so while I was joking around some...I do think there is truth to their incessant polite facade, when a Pennsylvanian dislikes you ...well its pretty obvious....at least from my experience.

True enough. I think another part of the problem (from my experience) is the cultures are so different Northerners and Southerners take a while to finally understand each other. I have also talked to my Southern friends who say the North is "rude" to try to get them to understand it's not necessarily rude (although of course it can be) its just the pace of life is different. A southerner will stop at a gas station and tell you their life story. If you are in a hurry and don't want to listen, suddenly you're rude.

Dead on...my expereince too...

not just southerners by the way...took a gaggle of folks from Utah to NY for some touring and business...they thought folks were being rude because they really don't have time to "yak". They also said I changed...all of the sudden I was driving like a mad man, and walking 100 miles an hour everywhere...I lived in Mid Town for a year, and I guess you just revert to what works...:). Anyway they were a bit out of sorts, but they all eventually get it...just takes time...probably the same if I took mid-towners to the south...
