Recruiting class is solid

Class isn't too bad, it's not like most of the schools on our schedule are doing better recruiting this year.

S 03 @ Pittsburgh
S 10 @ Michigan
S 17 MICHIGAN ST.
S 24 @ Washington
O 01 @ Purdue
O 15 USC
O 22 BYU
N 05 TENNESSEE
N 12 NAVY
N 19 SYRACUSE
N 26 @ Stanford

Our current recruiting class is ranked higher then Pitt's, Washington, BYU, Navy, Stanford, and Syracuse. So we've recruitied better then half our schedule.

Michigan St, and Purdue are barely ahead of us, but thats because they have alot more commits then ND, so quality wise ND is better then them too.

Michigan, Tennesse, and USC are the only teams on our schedule that out recruited us. Thats only 3 teams....

I think its a great class, and I say great because after Ty was fired, This class looked DOA. And we got 15 good players, so I'm happy. Talent was never the problem, it was coaching, and I believe that has changed.

The thing thats makes me laugh is the players that chose to go to another school. I look forward to ND playing against them.
And seeing the looks on their faces.

Yeah when looking at recruiting team rankings, I never look at where my team is ranked, rather I look at there star rating and rank that.

Quality not Qauntity

Just imagine what they could have done with an offensive coaching staff. Next year, they won't have that handicap. Will they?

I thought we'd break the top 15 this year and of course im a little disappointed. That was after i had seen us go from no where with Ty to the top 25 with Weis. Of course it looks as if we may break the top 25 in which case thats where we were and nothing changed. But really i am VERY down about Wilson's and Roche's choice and for some reason to me it seems that the last week or two for Weis went horrible for recruiting (losing Nelson, getting only 2 more recruits, etc) Am i correct in my thinking or could yall give me something to be joyful from?

i dont think it will matter, i dont expect the huskies to have a very good year. ty's recruiting efforts and ability to put together a quality staff like weis did, are about as useless as a screen door on a submarine.

oh never mind you are talking about average star rating not class ranking

which quality is better than quantity.

yeah i noticed that the 10 teams in front of us had a lower star rate like in the 2's

technically, yes, you're right. but if you look at they're looking at is the average star rating. when you look at that, the Irish are ranked #15. the difference comes in the number of recruits signed.

no, man - you're a little off in your thinking. try to keep it in perspective. weis took some recruits down to the wire in the little time that he had. just because they didn't go our way doesn't mean the last two weeks went horrible.

try to look at it this way...in the last two weeks, weis has turned a lot of heads and forced a lot of second thoughts from virtually everyone - the media, coaches, recruits, etc.

NOBODY has a banner recruiting year in the middle of a coaching change. (florida being the exception). would you rather have a class like syracuse, pittsburg or washington?

Florida saved their class by firing Zook mid-season and (apparently) hiring Meyer before the end of the season. None of the kids committing to Florida had their precious hearts broken.

Jonathan Garner had his heart broken by Meyer. He was Florida's QB commit (top 20 QB) he stayed committed even after Zook was fired. But when Meyer went to Florida he told the kid to take a hike and brought in Josh Portis, and poor Garner was left outside.

Felt bad for the kid, he said all the right things, stayed with the school after the Zook firing, then comes Meyer and he tells him he doesn't want him.

College football can be a dirty business, luckily the kid ended up at Georgia Tech, Spurrier went after him hard. Wish he would of went to South Carolina, and beat Meyer.

Wish the kid luck, he was treated unfairly....

Hey thanks for your insight but by the fact that the last two weeks went horrible i didnt mean cause of Weis' fault but rather because the Irish didnt have their luck. Thats what i meant.

Meyer has really come across like an asshole: First, apparently taking a job with Florida covertly; Second, playing ND before the media for personal gain; Third, treating this kid like a POS; And finally, hypocritically whining about his recruits being approached while simultaneously working over ND's and claiming Portis.

He is certainly a proven coach, but he also gives all appearances of being a dick.

Yeah I felt bad for the kid. I'm surprized he didn't go to South Carolina, to get a shot at beating Meyer.

The kid was genuinely upset and mad. Urban basically just took his scholarship offer away. I understand if he felt the kid wasn't a match for his system, but theres a certain way to go about it. First of all you don't tell the kid over the phone, you pay a visit to him face to face and explain to him your not right for my system.

Second you don't pull his offer, you let him leave on his own terms, the school made a promise to that kid by offering him a scholarship and if he wanted to stay you let him stay, odds are he leave anyway.

But I don't think this was because this kid didn't fit his system (physically the kid is the same as Alex Smith, not to mention the kid is a top 20 QB) it's because Urban knew Portis was a better prospect, and Portis wouldn't come to Florida when they already had a QB commit so Urban yanked it so he could get the better player.

quote from coach weis on recruiting class:

All I know is that we had more (scholarships to give) -- between my guidance and our staff, we decided not to go to the limit, because we didn't want to bring in the wrong type of kid. I mean, we could have gone and brought another four or five kids just to make everyone happy, "oh, they signed 20 guys." But I think it's not important -- it's not important, the number of guys you sign. It's signing the right type of guys, and I'm happy with the guys we signed.

my thoughts exactly.

just to add a little more to this discussion; another quote i found by weis:

What was it that Paul Hornung said? That Notre Dame couldn't compete because its academic standards were too tough? Weis says it's a crock. Maybe the Fighting Irish can't get all the best athletes. But they can get good football players. You can win with a core of smart, motivated guys who fit into a system.

"Everyone wants the top 20 players in the country," Weis said. "But what guys are going to fit into what you do? What guys are your type of guys? So many times, people get enamored with, "What's the recruiting class rated, who is this player?'

its so true too. as the old adage says, "there's no i in team". you can have the best athletes on a team, but if they're all doing their own thing and don't fit into the system, you will lack results. i think with weis, he's going to be able to mold these players into a wicked efficient system and team that will produce the ultimate result which is the national championship.

Id love to see Lee Corso and Bob Davie being the commentators for that NC. Oh that'd be so funny.......While the Trophy's being handed to us i just hear Davie and Corso saying "It wasnt the coaching. Notre Dame has too tough of academic standards. They'll always be mediocre. Weis is an idiot for taking the job. Notre Dame screwed Ty."

its so funny when people talk about the academic standards, the weather in south bend, there's nothing to do, blahblahblah. correct me if i'm wrong, but not much has changed since the late 80's early 90's when nd was in the running every year! academic standards were the same. weather hasn't changed. still the same lame bars. sure, would someone maybe enjoy playing in miami florida as opposed to south bend? of course. but you now have so much talent to work with coming out of highschool, that when you have a coach that can get players to play and mold to their system, you have ingredients to win.

Lol, all true. And you know what? I once saw headline from newspapers in the parseghian era complaining about academics at Notre Dame! Everyone on ESPN talks about this like its a new issue when its not at all.

And as far as South Bend having bad weather and nothing to do, its not like Michigan and Ohio State are in tropical paradises, and I doubt the nightlife at Oklahoma rivals Miami so much.....

true. and the sportscasters that say the florida schools have an advantage over the Irish in terms of weather, nightlife, etc. are overlooking a couple important points. how about the opportunity to travel all over the country with a national schedule? or the fact that you'll be playing on a national tv broadcast for every game? talk about an opportunity to showcase your talent....
