Coach Brian Polian from Notre Dame came to visit me at Holy Trinity today and we talked about the new head coach and the situation there. Coach Polian said they are glad to get me up there this weekend because Coach Weiss will be there along with a lot of their top commitments and prospects. He said it would be great to get to know some of my future teammates if I choose to go there.

Coach Polian assists with the defensive backs along with Coach Brian Lewis, who is coming from the Miami Dolphins. Coach Polian is the son of the general manager of the Indianapolis Colts so as a player playing for him, if your good enough you'll at least get a look by the NFL. Not just from his contacts but from the whole staff because of their relationships with people across the NFL. Doesn't sound too bad!

Coach Polian told me that not everybody is a Notre Dame person and that they are only looking for special guys. Good people that are good students and good athletes. He said not everybody has the combination to get into Notre Dame but they are committed to getting the best student-athletes in the country and making the program a National Championship contender.

He said that he flew to Florida today to talk to just two people, me and another. I took that as a huge compliment. I asked Coach Polian how long he thought it would take for them to get back to that kind of elite status? He said, "honestly, two years."

Coach Geis from Georgia Tech was supposed to come today as well but didn't make it. I'm guessing he will be here later this week.

Sounds like he is smarter then Wilkes was

Monday, November 29
Coach Wilkes the secondary coach from Notre Dame came to the school and met with Coach Thomas and I. We talked about their depth chart and how I would fit into their system. Coach Wilkes said he felt I had a great chance to play early because they need help in their secondary. I agree, I saw the USC game!

I started telling him my observations of the game and what I thought they should have done. I told him what USC was doing became predictable and he agreed. He said he liked my ability to read defenses and the way I go up and fight for the ball.

A lot of that I owe to Coach Al, my secondary coach here. He coached me up and has helped give me the ability to read defenses. He gave me a lot of freedom my junior and senior year and he actually allowed me to make all the calls. I give him a lot of credit for helping me and then trusting me. Our relationship was two sided, he listened and didn't just discount what I thought because he was the coach. He really help make me enjoy playing safety more then receiver. Thanks Coach Al, I'm going to miss ya!

Later that evening after school, Coach Wilkes came to my Dad's house and met with my parents and I. He explained my situation with them and told me where I stood with them and how much of an impact I could make there. He said that he knows every coach will make their school sound good so he tried to talk more about the meaning of a degree from Notre Dame. That there is life after football.

My Dad told Coach Wilkes that I haven't been away from home and haven't lived in the cold climate before, he wanted to make sure that I would be taken care of. Coach Wilkes assured him that I would be taken care of and that I would be leaving a family and coming to another family and that there was nothing to worry about.

My Dad also told him that he has stressed my education more then anything but the decision on where I go is up to me since I'm the one going to be there. I think that it is a great opportunity, academically and athletically. It is an awesome opportunity to get great exposure because of their contract with NBC. I'm not sure yet because I want to explore the other schools that are interested and make sure that whatever I pick, is the right fit for me.

Tuesday, November 30
In the morning, I met with Coach Thomas like I usually do, we talked about what went on last night. I was looking forward to going up to see Notre Dame in person this weekend then BAM! At 2:30 p.m. EST, I was informed by Coach Thomas that Coach Willingham was just fired. I thought coach was joking so I didn't think anything of it at first. About fifteen minutes later, coach and I met up again and I realized, this ain't no joke!

Now I'm thinking, what about my trip? Then my thoughts go to, how could they do Coach Willingham like that? In the times I've talked to him, I could tell he was a great person, a great coach and was turning their program around. After hearing all of this it really drove home to me just how demanding they are as a school and how big football is there.

Now the question is, like the Florida situation, who is the coach going to be. I hear everybody say Urbin Meyer but they said Steve Spurrier was going to be the next coach at Florida and you saw what happened there. Tonight, after watching ESPN for about two hours straight, I was called by Jimmy Gonzales, director of player development at Notre Dame. Mr. Gonzalez informed me that my official visit was postponed and would probably be late January if I'm still interested by then.

Personally, I wish they had kept Coach Willingham because I would have liked to see him win that 12th national championship at Notre Dame. Oh well, another life lesson, here today, gone tomorrow! Boy, they sure don't settle for anything less then winning! It sure says how much they want it!

Herring is a sharp kid

Herring is a sharp kid

I know I have to pick the right school academically, then look at their football program. Campus life and the area the school is in are important also but academics and football are the top two things that absolutely have to be right.

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaay Herring, Come On Down!

Absolute MUST read.

I think my favorite line was: "All the recruits went into a back room and Coach Weiss spoke to us and thanked us for coming. He told us he was going to have to leave to fly back to New England for a 6 a.m. staff meeting. As he was walking out, the band who had been playing soft restaurant music broke into the Notre Dame fight song and everybody cheered for Coach Weiss as he left. They take their football serious!"

LOL Ray... Yes, we do.

Yeah I think it will be a tough decision.

He is a very lucky individual to be able to go through all this recruiting. Especially the ND recruiting process. I would have given my left nutt to have been recruited by ND when I was in HS. (SDSU just wasnt the same)

Talk about getting choked up... Anybody that gets choked up from an ND video, is hooked!!! Thats when you know you love ND. I think he will come over.

He's only a 2 star player on Rivals. But thats a little misleading. He has alot of good schools after him, ND, Florida, Tennesse, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Fredo

He's listed as a safety but I'd like to see him play corner. He has solid speed. Could be a nice physical corner, we've been lacking.

don't disrespect the aztecs, man!

herring seems to have caught onto the magic of the place. i think weis is a great head coach for the smarter players, as they'll be more apt to pick up on his mastery of the game and be attracted by that, more so than some SEC line coach's promises of playing time, etc...

go irish. amazing what weis has done with this class.

I grew up in San Diego so I know that you dont have to disrepect the Aztecs they usually play bad enough for them to do that themselves.

So it looks like we are already back up to ten comitts.

Anyone know, can this kid play corner? I know he's a safety prospect, but we're pretty set at safety. He seems pretty athletic, so maybe he can play cover corner in college?

Excellent. Now I just hope he's athletic enough to play corner. If he is, that could be a solid secondary within a few years w/ him at cover corner, Bruton at free safety and Washington (if he stays commited) at strong safety. Not to mention Tommy Z's still around for a couple more seasons....

What is 100% better is these are exactly the kids that we need here at Notre Dame. You know, those guys that will leave their left leg out on the field if it meant winning. Kids that have that pride and can bring back that swagger.

We.... Are... ND

This is excellent news!!! Weis is really starting to build some mo, now all he needs to do is steal one or two big fish (just like Reggie Bush and Lorenzo Booker were stolen from us!)....One in particular is Brian Cushing from Bergen Catholic (NJ), can play almost anywhere and is just the kind of NASTY player CDub is looking for....Cushing put us back on the radar screen after CW stopped by his house on a recruiting trip. Cushing's father is a HUGE ND fan and wants him to go to SoBe....Fingers crossed.
