lol...I agree. But in this day and age, there are only about 5 coaches who could turn around ND so quickly after the mess that has happened since Holtz left. I think TyWillie is a great man & a good coach. Is he a great coach...no. But how many "great" coaches are there in any sport?irishgo8 said:Dude sometimes i think u go too far promoting ty....8 recruits in 3 years .586 record......not at ALL acceptable for ND

True, but kind of like Aerosmith said, great assistants can make a head coach great. I think Ty's staff was average at best. I think all of them are probably solid coaches, but as a team it didn't "gel".nayers said:but ND is in a sports class like that of the yankees, Lakers, Cowboys etc..these programs are the ones that get the great coaches...they are the ones who are always on the frontlines of everything positive...they don't settle, or tolerate anything that is average...weather it is players, coaches, management, etc. Ty is an average coach...not bad, not great...average. sorry, ND doesn't work well with that
Well, the ap seems to think there was twenty-five better ones then ours the last two years.I know his first year he went 8-0,but that defense made crazy plays. That team I think fit his attitude of being calm. How many times this year did it look like they just gave up.There was no fire in any of the payback games(If BC keeps winning we are going to have to switch to astro turf)I can't remember if we ever came out after halftime and stuck it to anyone.TY was not the right fit for ND and I really don't know if he is really that good of a coach. How does he compare to Davie?I guess we will find out in a few years at Washington. :rocket:NDLyght37 said:lol...I agree. Maybe...but I mean how many "great" coaches are out there. Who's out there like Bowden was, or Spurrier was, or Paterno was, or Holtz? In any sport, pro or college, I think that there's only like 4 or 5 "great" coaches. Every other coach is somewhere in between. Is Bowden great anymore? Probably not. but what separates him from a guy like Paterno or even when Holtz was down in South Carolina is two things: recruiting talented kids, and having a solid coaching staff.seIRISH said:Well, the ap seems to think there was twenty-five better ones then ours the last two years.I know his first year he went 8-0,but that defense made crazy plays. :rocket:
But how do you judge a good coach from a bad coach. It is about wins and how they rebound from peaks and valleys. The way you tell if someone is good or bad is by what they do with the situation they inherit. He did not want to get rid of his assistant but now are they all going to washington with him.Why not make this off.cordinator change before.NDLyght37 said:Maybe...but I mean how many "great" coaches are out there. Again, I agree that ultimately Ty was not right for ND...but I also don't think Ty was a "bad" coach. A lot of times, how good or bad you are is influenced by the situation you inherit. Is Phil Jackson the greatest coach ever? No...but he knows how to pick a job. (how's that for a rabbit trail, nayers?)

He's only taking Baer as the DC...at least that's the word on the UW boards. he's keeping 2 or 3 guys on from the current Husky staff. But perhaps the best news (for Ty) is that he's bringing in a brand new OC (not from ND or from UW). If he gets a young "Urban Meyer"-type, they could be dangerous. Apparently they just got this kid Johnny Durocher, a transfer from Oregon. Supposedly this kid was a Top-10 QB coming out of high school in 2003. He redshirted for a year, and then transferred. So Ty might have another Brady Quinn on his hands. But the question is, if Ty wins 10 games next year is he a great coach? I still say no. Again, he's a solid coach, but situations often define your "greatness". To me, the great ones are the ones who build something out of nothing and sustain it (Bowden, Spurrier, Dean Smith, Coach K, Bobby Knight, Eddie Robinson, etc.).seIRISH said:But how do you judge a good coach from a bad coach. It is about wins and how they rebound from peaks and valleys. The way you tell if someone is good or bad is by what they do with the situation they inherit. He did not want to get rid of his assistant but now are they all going to washington with him.Why not make this off.cordinator change before.![]()

Oh, I wasn't saying he's going to win 10 games...I think at best they win 7 (including a bowl game), but probably more like 5 or 6 wins.nayers said:i dont see anyway he wins 10 games next year, or the year after, or the year after...have you seen the talent they have right now...pathetic, and they are tied for 90th place in recruiting this year behind schools like SMU, Tulsa, Kent state... i know it is still early, no talent, plus average coaching, doesn't equal success.. but hey if he does win 10 games, i will be the first to say how right you are, and how stupid i am
Well we've only got the next ten years to find out who is right.I am officially done with the subject of Ty.On to the new chapter of ND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!can I get an amen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!NDLyght37 said:Oh, I wasn't saying he's going to win 10 games...I think at best they win 7 (including a bowl game), but probably more like 5 or 6 wins.
My point was that if Ty led them to 10 wins, does that all of a sudden make him a "great" coach? I don't think so. I don't think that your "coach rating" changes that much from year to year unless you are really really bad or really really good...Ty was neither. But if he leads the Huskies to the level where USC has been for the last 4-5 years, then he could be approaching greatness.

Nah, I just think TyWillie said, "Fool me once, shame on me, fool me twice...shame on you".QueensNY said:Why isn't Ty bringing Diedrick to Washington? Ty could of stayed at ND if he canned Diedrick, but he didn't. now he's going to Washington without Diedrick. Seems to me Ty wanted ND to fire him so he could go to Washington, plus get extra money from ND.

Yep i do too...In fact i think he would have fired himself to get the double salary "feel bad for Ty" a bashing of ND on ESPN, on and on but i am glad that era is over withRip Rap said:I question Ty's intentions too, actually. He was already talking to Washington the week of the Pitt game and refused to make changes to his staff when White asked him to. It really seemed like Willingham wanted to get the hell out of dodge, but a firing preserved the big bucks of his contract.
