Why is it that Notre Dame uses a Zone-Blocking System(ZBS)? I know that it used by some teams that have more athletic linemen, but we have guys that should be maulers, why not let them go one on one?

Lack of speed maybe? Or quickness? I don't know. I have noticed this also.

Matt,

As a play develops, "one on one" is an inevitability regardless of the blocking scheme. (Unless the lineman are facing backwards.)

I mean they have to hit somebody. Zone blocking just makes it easier to counter defensive movement. I'm not a coach (except in my mind). So I don't know the tactical pros and cons.

P.S. The one thing I did notice about MSU was the quality of their pursuit. Generally, offensive lineman on the backside of a play are sent down field to pick off db's and backside lb's in case the play breaks. I saw very little of that during the game. MSU was very good on the defensive attack across their full 11.

P.P.S. Whew! This dilettantism is exhausting...
